To improve the procedures for estimating the abundance of the rice bug, Leptocorisa chinensis Dallas (Heteroptera: Alydidae), field monitoring using traps baited with synthetic attractant was conducted in Tsukuba, central Japan from 2002 to 2006. A mixture of (E)-2-octenyl acetate and 1-octanol, in a ratio of 5 : 1 and incorporated into a plastic pellet, was used as bait on sticky boards and placed at study sites from early June to the end of October. The attractantbaited traps were able to detect the starting of the migration period of the overwintered generation and the population increase of the first generation. The number of trapped insects decreased rapidly after early September, while the number of insects in second generation increased in the grassy weeds field. The decreased temperatures and shorter daylength of autumn (which will have induced reproductive diapause) may have affected the attractiveness of the baited traps. The ratio of males to all captured L. chinensis was 0.88-0.96. Most captured adults had no food in their stomachs, and most males were sexually mature. These results indicate that the males trapped had actively moved for two possible reasons: to search for food and/or to search for females. Based on comparisons between the results of baited trap monitoring and sweep-net surveys, it was considered that immigrant period and density of L. chinenis in the poaceous plants fields depend on the density of dispersal individuals and the heading period of the plants.

Abstract. Volatiles and contact pheromones involved in the mating behaviour of the Painted bug, Bagrada hilaris Burmeister (Heteroptera: Pentatomidae), were investigated in behavioural and chemical experiments. Vertical open Y-shaped olfactometer bioassays showed that odour from males attract females but not males, while that from females did not attract either gender. Adult females were also attracted by hexane extracts of volatile compounds collected from males. In open arena bioassays, males displayed the characteristic steps of courtship behaviour in the presence of virgin females. Such courtship behaviour was displayed in the presence of females killed by freezing, but not in the presence of freeze-killed females washed with hexane. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) analysis of volatile compounds produced by cohorts of 20 B. hilaris adults and collected over 48 h showed that both males and females produce the compounds nonanal, decanal and (E)-2-octenyl acetate. Of these compounds males produce significantly more (E)-2-o-octenyl acetate, i.e. 186.74 ng and 67.53 ng for males and females respectively. These findings indicate this compound is possibly a long range volatile pheromone, and a complex lipophilic fraction of the adult cuticle possible contact pheromone involved in short range courtship behaviour.

Attractiveness of different amounts of methyl (E,E,Z)-2,4,6-decatrienoate, the aggregation pheromone of brown-winged stink bug, Plautia stali (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae), was tested using different kinds of dispensers. A lure filled with hexane was used as a control treatment. There were no differences in the attractiveness of the pheromone to P. stali and Halyomorpha halys among dispensers (polyethylene-vial, rubber septum, and polyethylene tube). Traps baited with 7, 20, 40, 50, and 60 mg of pheromone were tested for their attractiveness. For females, the 40 mg trap attracted highest number of P. stali, even though there were no significant differences among pheromone amounts. For males, the 40 and 50 mg traps attracted significantly more bugs than the 7, 20, and 60 mg traps and the control traps. Based on these results, the pheromone dispenser impregnated with 40 mg of pheromone will be practical in monitoring P. stali in the field.
