Attraction of Plautia stali (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae) to Different Amounts of Its Aggregation Pheromone and the Effect of Different Dispensers

Abstract: Attractiveness of different amounts of methyl (E,E,Z)-2,4,6-decatrienoate, the aggregation pheromone of brown-winged stink bug, Plautia stali (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae), was tested using different kinds of dispensers. A lure filled with hexane was used as a control treatment. There were no differences in the attractiveness of the pheromone to P. stali and Halyomorpha halys among dispensers (polyethylene-vial, rubber septum, and polyethylene tube). Traps baited with 7, 20, 40, 50, and 60 mg of pheromone were tes… Show more

“…Capture of adult H. halys in traps baited with the P. stali pheromone occurs primarily between July and September (Tada et al 2001a,b, Funayama 2003, Ohira 2003, but in an outbreak year, captures have been recorded season-long, starting in May (Funayama 2008). Captures were not signiÞcantly different among traps using polyethylene vials, tubes, or rubber septa as lure dispensers (Park et al 2010). Bae et al (2012) demonstrated that traps baited with male H. halys were attractive to both sexes of the species.…”

“…The male-produced aggregation pheromone (methyl (E,E,Z)-2,4,6-decatrienoate) of the brown-winged green bug, Plautia stali Scott (Sugie et al 1996) is commonly used to attract H. halys to traps (e.g., Fujisawa 2001, Tada et al 2001a,b, Lee et al 2002, Adachi et al 2007, Park et al 2010). Fujisawa (2001 and Funayama (2008) proposed that the mechanism of H. halys cross-attraction to the P. stali pheromone is in response to searching for food sources.…”

“…Based on GC-MS analyses, this decrease in P. stali pheromone was mainly caused by isomerization of EEZ-10Me. Park et al (2010) reported that there was no significant difference in attraction of P. stali according to dispensers-PE vial, septum, and polytube. However, Khrimian et al (2007) reported that ca.…”
