Indonesia is a country with the largest extent of mangroves in the world. However, as the human population increases, the extent and quality of the mangroves decrease. The increasing population is in line with the increase in human activities, leading to deforestation and degradation of the mangrove forests. This paper aimed to review anthropogenic activities that cause mangrove deforestation and degradation in Indonesia and the impacts of such anthropogenic activities on the mangrove ecosystems and formulate the efforts to overcome mangrove deforestation and degradation in the country. Various human activities are the primary drivers of deforestation and degradation of mangroves, including land conversion from mangrove forests into other land uses (e.g., agricultural lands, ponds, infrastructure developments, and human settlements), extractive activities (e.g., mining and logging), and household and industrial activities (e.g., plastic debris, heavy metals pollutants). These anthropogenic factors reduce mangrove forest area, changes in mangrove composition, uneven species abundance, and pollution. Combined with sea-level rise caused by global climate changes, such activities pose devastating threats to Indonesian mangroves. Efforts to overcome these problems include increasing awareness of communities regarding mangrove conservation, conducting mangrove restoration programs, and promoting sustainable management of mangrove, for example, through ecotourism. On top of that, community participation plays an essential role in Indonesia's sustainable management and conservation of mangrove forests.

Damage to mangrove trees is one of them influenced by the types of tree damage. The more types of tree damage to a single mangrove tree, the worse the health level of the mangrove tree will be. This study aims to obtain damage index trend values and types of tree damage in the east coast mangrove forest area, East Lampung Regency. Measurement of the types of damage to mangrove trees was carried out three times using the Forest Health Monitoring (FHM) method in two FHM cluster plots for each mangrove forest area. Assessment of damage to mangrove trees uses the Damage Index formula. The results showed that the trend index values for mangrove tree damage were 9.3 and 4.5 (Resort Kuala Penet, Way Kambas National Park), 9.2 and 19.8 (Margasari, Labuhan Maringgai), and 6.2. and 9.8 (Purworejo, Pasir Sakti) with the dominant types of damage being open wounds (code 03) 343 damage, damaged foliage/shoots (code 24) 240 damage, and broken/dead (code 22) 158 damage. Thus, the trend of damage index and types of damage to mangrove trees in the east coast mangrove forest area of East Lampung Regency has increased.

The Indonesian government has launched a mangrove rehabilitation program of 600,000 ha in 2021-2024. This program needs information about mangrove forest damage obtained quickly and accurately. Remote sensing technology is a solution to the availability of the required speed of information. Mangrove damage information can be obtained from the canopy density derived from the vegetation index. This study aims to detect mangrove damage based on the density level derived from the vegetation index. The data used are SPOT 6 satellite imagery recorded in 2020 with the research location in Ngurah Rai forest park. The vegetation index used is Normalized Different Vegetation Index (NDVI), Green Normalized Different Vegetation Index (GNDVI), and Optimized Soil Adjusted Vegetation Index (OSAVI). Field data for validation were collected by the vertical photos that provide information on the percentage of canopy density. Furthermore, the density model was built using linear regression and validation using the coefficient of determination (R2). The results show that the vegetation index positively correlates with canopy density. NDVI and OSAVI have an identical R2 of 0.75, while GNDVI has an R2 of 0.70. Generally, the mangroves in Ngurah Rai forest park are dominated by mangroves in good condition and only 2.81% in some locations in damaged condition.
