The purpose of this paper is to review and evaluate published literature on the causes, impacts, implications and mitigation strategies of anthropogenic activities on mangrove forests. A systematic method was utilized to access research works of literature on “Impacts and implications of anthropogenic activities on mangrove forests”. A total of fifty-three (53) research papers published between the years 1975 to 2024 was accumulated and used for this review. A subjective approach was used to select the topics: impact and implications of anthropogenic activities on mangrove forests. In this paper, five (5) roles of mangroves were assessed and presented. Anthropogenic activities that threaten mangrove forests such as land conversion, mining and logging activities and household and industrial activities were also evaluated. Further, four (4) detrimental anthropogenic activities and the potential impacts they have on natural mangrove forests and the ecosystems they thrive in was also reported on. In addition, this paper reviewed some mitigation strategies for sustainable management and conservation of our mangroves, their ecosystems and the coastlines. The published works of literature established that reduced mangrove forests, altered mangrove composition, unequal species abundance, mass mangrove mortality, pollution in mangrove areas, rising sea levels, global climate change and coastal erosion or abrasion are all effects of anthropogenic activity that have a negative impact on mangrove forests and the ecosystems. This review highlights the fact that more studies on the impact and implications of anthropogenic activities on mangroves should be done in neotropical countries since there are paucity of such information on research and published data in these biodiversity rich regions.

This study aims to determine the bio-ecological condition of mangroves that could be considered for the rehabilitation planning process by the government or any other entities. This study was conducted in Ciseukeut-Panimbang, Pandeglang. Eight mangrove species were found, which belongs to four families of Avicenniaceae, Myrsinaceae, Euphorbiaceae, and Rhizophoraceae. The density of mangrove species in the study site ranges from 113-744 ind/ha. The results of the diversity index value showed that mangrove vegetation was in the low category with a range of 0.04 – 0.16. This value indicates the presence of environmental pressures, so the mangrove ecosystem is considered unstable. The dominance index belongs to the low category with a range of 0.03 - 0.23. The uniformity index value is also low at 0.01-0.08. The value shows that the mangrove ecosystem in Ciseukeut Panimbang Village is experiencing pressure, or its condition has decreased. Efforts to rehabilitate mangroves in Panimbang regency can be done by planting from the dominant mangroves Avicennia sp and Rhizophora sp. These species play a very important role in Panimbang, its important value index was 90,66% and 56,77%. The timing of planting propagules in Pandeglang area should be carried out in the eastern season so that the propagule can grow optimally and safely inundate from tides that occur in the western season with a height of up to 1 m.

Several mangrove conservation programs have been implemented in Tanzania to reverse degradation of mangrove ecosystem in the country. However, after their introduction in 1990s, many small-scale farmers relying on the mangrove ecosystems lost their livelihoods. To ensure that the people’s well-being and ecological integrity of the mangrove ecosystem are sustained, this study investigated the impact of nature conservation practices on financial sustainability, food security of local communities as well as ecological integrity of the mangrove ecosystem. The study employed a mixed-method approach where a survey was used to collect quantitative data from 90 household respondents selected randomly for a questionnaire survey. This was supplemented by data collected through personal observations and interviews administered to 30 local people (mainly key informants and focus group discussion). Quantitative data were analyzed through crosstab IBM SPSS version 20. Qualitative data were analyzed using content method. The results indicated that the conservation practices introduced brought a significant difference in financial stability (p<0.05) by increasing incomes of the implementing households to US $80.29 compared to US $69.20 for the non-implementing households. However, 83% of the implementing households still faced food insecurity by having meals only twice daily, although it was slightly higher compared to 80% for the non-implementing households. The 85% of the implementing and 65% of non-implementing households perceived that the conservation practices had improved the ecological integrity of the mangrove ecosystem by increasing the vegetation cover. The results of this study suggest that conservation practices in the mangrove ecosystem have increased financial sustainability and ecological integrity but failed to enhance food security. This study recommends the integration of rights of local communities on usage of land for paddy and fish farming to achieve sustainable economic growth in the estuary.
