Identification and Biological Characterization ofLeishmania (Viannia) guyanensisIsolated from a Patient with Tegumentary Leishmaniasis in Goiás, a Nonendemic Area for This Species in Brazil

Abstract: The aim of this study was to characterize clinical field isolates of Leishmania spp. obtained from patients with American Tegumentary Leishmaniasis (ATL) who live in Goiás state, Brazil. The presumed areas of infection were in Goiás, Tocantins, and Pará states. Three isolates of parasites were identified as L. (Viannia) braziliensis and one as L. (V.) guyanensis. The in vitro growth profiles were found to be similar for all parasites. Nevertheless, in C57BL/6 mice, L. (V.) guyanensis infection was better contr… Show more

“…In a recent study, Pires et al . (2015), reporting the characterization of an isolate of L. guyanensis from a patient in Goiás, Brazil, emphasized the crucial importance of correct identification and characterization of species of the subgenus Leishmania Viannia , suggesting that the presence of L. guyanensis may be underestimated in endemic regions. Despite the epidemiologic importance of L. guyanensis , in PubMed web site (), as accessed 12 December 2018, of the 13 134 hits containing the keyword Leishmania in the title of the article, only 93 (0.71%) contains the words Leishmania and guyanensis , demonstrating the remarkable lack of data concerning this important species.…”

“…Two different patterns of digestion were obtained that were sequenced as described. 6 Sequence analysis of one clone representative of each one of the two patterns indicated the presence of one sequence 99% identical with the reference strain Leishmania (Leishmania) amazonensis (MHOM/BR/ 73M2269), whereas the second profile corresponded to a sequence presenting 98% identity with the reference strain Leishmania (Viannia) guyanensis (MHOM/BR/75/M4147). The comparison between sequences of these two profiles revealed 62% identity ( Figure 3).…”
