ICT, activity space–time and mobility: new insights, new models, new methodologies

Abstract: Over three decades have passed since research on the complex interrelationships between Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) and travel behaviour began. Since then much has changed. Broadly speaking researchers have been chasing a complex and bi-directional moving target with both the development of digital technologies (what we refer to as three Internet generations) and changes to human behaviours coinciding side by side. As both transportation technologies and ICT contribute to remote activities… Show more

“…This third and final section relates to the current research field and how new lifestyles contribute to changing travel behaviour [124][125][126]. While the literature on these subjects is booming, especially regarding the current pandemic, our corpus indicates that it has largely neglected the question of carpooling with the exception of recent research on the impacts that shared autonomous vehicles could have on its development [127,128].…”

“…Increasing affordability and access to digital devices with high data processing capabilities allows for the gathering and monitoring of more types and larger volumes of data related to mobility (Ben-Elia and Zhen, 2018) and transport analytics (Ukkusuri and Yang, 2019). Commonly referred to as 'Big Data', these can be characterised in various ways, mainly building on "3 V's": Volume, Velocity and Variety (Laney, 2001), such as Veracity, Visualisation and Visibility to emphasise the potential for an increased quality of geo-spatial data (Li et al, 2016).…”

“…Information and Communications Technology (ICT), via e-working, e-shopping and e-leisure, is playing a significant role in reorganizing daily spatial patterns at urban and regional levels ( Shen et al, 2020 ). People can perform daily tasks anywhere and at any time, thus overcoming space-time barriers ( Ben-Elia and Zhen, 2018 , Thulin and Vilhelmson, 2019 ). It also serves as a catalyst in new fragmentation patterns of daily activities in both space and time, reshaping planning practice, for example, by changing use of dedicated places and modifying traditional travel patterns ( Alexander et al, 2011 ).…”
