“…McAuslan & Smith (1968) have demonstrated, however, that frog virus 3 DNA is associated with the nucleus in BHK 2 I cells. Nuclear involvement has not been observed in iridescent virus-infected cells (Kelly & Robertson, 1973 I would like to thank Mrs Elizabeth M o r t o n and Mrs Thelma Lescott, together with M r M. G. “…These viruses were originally grouped together based on their icosahedral symmetry, large double-stranded DNA genomes and the presence of non-cellular-membranederived envelopes (Kelly & Robertson 1973). Their unique replication strategy, involving both nuclear and cytoplasmic phases (Murti e t al.…”

“…It is morphologicaly similar to, but larger than, frog virus 3 (Darlington,Granoff & Breeze,I966;Lunger & Came,I966) and Tipula iridescent virus (Almeida,Waterson & Plowright,I967). On the basis of this rather limited information, ASFV has been classified as a member of the icosahedral cytoplasmic deoxyribovirus group (Wilner, 1969;Kelly & Robertson, 1973). Because of the problems involved in purifying the virus, however, precise biochemical characterization has not been attempted (Hess,I97 I) so that comparison with members of the icosahedral deoxyriboviruses at present is tentative.…”
