Abstract: Studies that organize lists of species are essential and act as the starting point for future discussions on the ecology of fish in environments that are poorly studied. The present paper describes the fish assemblage of the hydrographic basin of Chasqueiro Stream, an important component of the Mirim Lagoon system. Fish were collected during one year period between August/2012 and July/2013 in six sites, comprising three biotopes: upstream, reservoir and downstream. A total of 22,853 specimens were collected, … Show more

“…Following the pattern presented in other drainages (e.g. Corrêa et al 2015, Silva et al 2016, the species richness increased in the upstreamdownstream direction, which is related to the increased diversity and complexity of microhabitats. The rise in richness values due to the increase in the types of environments is in line with what was expected by the River Continuum Concept (Vannote et al 1980).…”

“…Both host species are detritivorous and edentulous (Dualiby, 1988;Oliveira and Soares, 1996;Corrêa and Piedras, 2008). In the laguna dos Patos drainage the two identified stomach contents included scales of Bryconamericus iheringii, a characid species with inferior mouth that feeds in the substrate (Orciolli and Bennemann, 2006) and is very abundant in creeks of this drainage (Corrêa et al, 2015). In the rio Uruguay drainage, three host species were found (Astyanax jacuhiensis, Astyanax fasciatus, and Acestrorhynchus pantaneiro), but in this case none have feeding habits associated to bottom feeding.…”

“…The coastal plain of southernmost Brazil is composed of complex aquatic environments, including coastal lagoons, lakes, and extensive wetland areas (Corrêa, Oliveira, Tuchtenhagen, Pouey, & Piedras, 2015;Waechter, 1985). These environments are essential to maintain fish diversity (Junk, Soares, & Bayley, 2007), at one time the home to a Neotropical region with the highest richness of freshwater fish species (Lévêque, Oberdorff, Paugy, Stiassny, & Tedesco, 2008), with more than 4,400 species described thus far (Reis, Kullander, & Ferraris, 2003).…”
