Ichthyofauna of streams of the Lower Paranapanema River basin, state of Paraná, Brazil

Abstract: Several studies of small watersheds of in the Upper Paraná River basin are currently available. However, the number and extent of its tributary streams still pose a challenge to enhancing current knowledge of their ichthyofauna. This study aimed to survey the fish fauna of three streams of the Lower Paranapanema River basin, state of Paraná, Brazil (Capim, Tenente and Centenário streams). The sampling included 3,167 specimens belonging to five orders, 17 families and 56 species. The streams presented differenc… Show more

“…This pattern of low species richness, associated with high endemism, has also characterized the ichthyofauna of other low-order streams in Iguaçu River basin (Ingenito et al 2004, Bifi et al 2006, Abilhoa et al 2008. These findings distinguish the fish fauna of headwaters of Iguaçu River basin from others similar streams of Paraná River system, with higher species richness (Araújo et al 2011, Marceniuk et al 2011, Hoffmann et al 2015, Vidotto-Magnoni et al 2015, Cetra et al 2016, Frota et al 2016a). Lower fish richness was also verified by Larentis et al (2016) to those that flows downstream it.…”

“…Characidae with a great number of smaller sized and generalists foraging species (sensu Castro 1999, Abelha et al 2001, normally have co-dominated with armored dwellers Loricariidae (Castro et al 2003, Araújo et al 2011, Hoffmann et al 2015, Vidotto-Magnoni et al 2015, or with catfishes Heptapteridae (Pereira et al 2014), and eventually with Cichlidae (Gubiani et al 2010), when non-native tilapias are present. However, similar to found herein, Trichomycteridae have been representative in low Iguaçu streams (Frota et al 2016b, Larentis et al 2016, probably by morphological adaptations of its species to dwelling in varied streams (Casatti 2003).…”

“…The Paranapanema River -one of the most important tributaries of the left margin of the Paraná River (Maack 2002, Duke Energy 2008 -hosts a significant part of this diversity, as evidenced by several fish inventories and ecological studies performed on its main course (Carvalho et al 1998, Pelicice et al 2005, Britto & Carvalho 2006, Orsi 2010, Orsi & Britton 2014, Pelicice et al 2018, tributaries, and sub-tributaries (Castro et al 2003, Cerqueira & Smith 2015, Vidotto-Magnoni et al 2015, Rosa et al 2016. Past works suggest that species compilations from the Paranapanema River alone vary from 155 (Duke Energy 2008) to 161 (Pelicice et al 2018).…”

“…Ichthyological surveys, also referred to in scientific literature as inventories (e.g., Giongo et al 2011;Vidotto-Magnoni et al 2015), are performed in order to assess the biodiversity of a stream, river or lake (Silveira et al 2010). Consequently, these studies may result in new discoveries (e.g., undescribed species) and can be implemented as the basis for conservation actions (e.g., Castro et al 2004, Serra et al 2007, Raiol et al 2012, Ohara & Loeb 2016, Silva-Oliveira et al 2016, Melo et al 2016, Ferreira et al 2017.…”
