“…We may suggest that this might be due to the greater availability of other diagnostic imaging examinations in the private hospital, such as magnetic resonance imaging and ultrasound [22]. Indeed, pediatric and young adult CT represents between 8 to 20% of the total number of CT examinations in less developed countries in Africa and Asia [22,23]. Conversely, studies conducted in developed countries as France, Germany, Switzerland and Israel have reported proportions of pediatric CT of 1-3% [7,11,12,24], while in the United States, pediatric and young adult CT represented 7-11% of the total number of CT procedures in the period 1998-2007 [13,14].…”

“…This may be a consequence of higher trauma rates in association with boys than girls. Indeed, it has been reported that most CT scans among children and young adults are head examinations due to trauma [5,28], with boys being generally more prone to trauma than girls [23].…”

“…14 Fáar nýlegar tölur um hlutfall TS-rannsókna af börnum af heildarfjölda liggja fyrir en samkvaemt könnun Alþjóðakjarn-orkustofnunarinnar á notkun TS í ríkjum sem búa við takmörkuð aðföng var hlutfallið árið 2009 4,3% í þeim löndum Evrópu sem könnunin náði til, 7,8% í Afríku og 12,2% í Asíu. 15 Í Bandaríkjunum hefur hlutfall rannsókna af börnum verið áaetlað 5-11% 16,17 en þar er heildarnotkun TS meiri og tíðnin jafnvel yfir 20/1000. 16 Notkun TS á barnasjúkrahúsum vestra hefur þó farið minnkandi undanfarin ár.…”

“…For this reason, many international and national radiation protection communities have continued to create awareness on the need to justify radiological procedures involving children as a primary step in eliminating some of them that are not necessary (2,3) . Determination of dose levels in paediatric radiology has also continued to attract many studies to establish paediatric dose levels as an input to optimisation (4 -9) .…”
