Validation of the Nursing Diagnosis Anxiety in Adult Patients Undergoing Bone Marrow Transplant

Abstract: Availability of clinically valid and reliable tools to help assess anxiety in this patient population could enhance patient outcomes. Recognizing and incorporating significant others' assessment of patient anxiety is important data to be considered in the planning and delivery of patient care.

“…The literature review showed that many researchers have worked to refine some DCs for the nursing diagnoses proposed by NANDA‐I (Adams et al., 1997; Whitley, 1994); they have suggested the inclusion of new characteristics supported by the literature and confirmed by validation studies of nursing diagnoses (Levin & Krainovich‐Miller, 1999; Taylor‐Loughran et al., 1989). Among these papers, there are some related to the anxiety diagnosis (Fadden, Fehring, & Kenkel‐Rossi, 1987; Wake, Fehring, & Fadden, 1991; Young, Polzin, Todd, & Simuncak, 2002); others are on both diagnoses (Adams et al., 1997; Levin & Krainovich‐Miller, 1999; Whitley, 1994, 1997), and there are also papers that suggest a possible association between both diagnoses (Adams et al., 1997; Whitley, 1997). There are no published reports by authors who have developed consensual validation and clinical validation of the diagnoses and their DCs or who have discussed the correlation between them.…”

“…Studies of oncology nursing care using SNTs were mostly focused on nursing diagnoses and were published in the 1990s in journals mostly relevant to SNTs (Courtens & Abu-Saad, 1998;Tiesinga, Dassen, & Halfens, 1996) (Ogasawara et al, 2005). Anxiety was reported to be experienced by patients in varied levels and required assessment at different points during care for patients undergoing Bone Marrow Transplant (Young, Polzin, Todd, & Simuncak, 2002). The NOC outcome Anxiety Level is able to meet this requirement for consistent monitoring.…”

“…On the unit, they conducted an electronic search using CINAHL and MEDLINE databases. The search revealed nursing and nonnursing studies and classic conceptual literature related to anxiety and fear (Fadden, Fehring, & Kendel-Rossi, 1987;Graham & Conley, 1971;Haag & Adamski, 1978;Jones & Jakob, 1981, 1984Kagan & Schulkin, 1995;Krainovich-Miller, 1988;Levin & Krainovich-Miller, 1999;Levin, Krainovich-Miller, Bahrenburg, & Mitchell, 1989;Lopez & Risey, 1986;Peplau, 1963;Scruton, 1986;Taylor-Loughran, O'Brien, LaChapelle, & Rangel, 1989;Whitley, 1989Whitley, , 1992aWhitley, , 1992bWhitley, , 1994Young, Polzin, Todd, & Simuncak, 2002).…”
