<i>Tribulus terrestris</i> Extract Improves Human Sperm Parameters In Vitro

Male dog infertility may represent a serious concern in the canine breeding market. The aim of this clinical evaluation was to test the efficacy of a commercially available nutraceutical diet, enriched with Lepidium meyenii, Tribulus terrestris, L-carnitine, zinc, omega-3 (N-3) fatty acids, beta-carotene, vitamin E, and folic acid, in 28 male dogs suffering from infertility associated with hypospermia. All dogs received the diet over a period of 100 days. At the end of the evaluation period, no adverse effects, including head and tail anomalies percentage onset, were reported. Interestingly, motility percentage, semen volume and concentration, and total number of sperms per ejaculation significantly increased. Further investigations on a wider cohort of dogs might be useful to better correlate the presence of oxytetracycline in pet's diet and the onset of infertility and clearly assess the action mechanism of an oxytetracycline-free nutraceutical diet.

Tríbulus terrestris L., an annual herb belonging to the Zygophyllaceae family and growing in moderate and tropical climates, has a rich chemical composition of biologically active substances and chemical elements.The aim of the work is a phytochemical study of Tribulus terrestris L. growing in different geographical zones.Materials and methods. The objects of study were herb specimens of Tribulus terrestris L. collected in different habitats. The samples of the raw materials were shade-dried. The determination of saponins in the raw materials, was carried out by high performance liquid chromatography with a mass spectrometric detection (HPLC-MS / MS). The study of the qualitative and quantitative composition of the elements was carried out on an X-ray fluorescence spectrometer.Results. The saponins had been studied by HPLC-MS/MS, according to which in all the studied samples, dioscin and protodioscin were found. Their retention times coincided with the retention times of dioscin and protodioscin standards. It has been established that among the macroelements of Tríbulus terrestris L., potassium and calcium are mostly accumulated. They account for about 90% of the total content of the elements in the plant. It has been revealed that the distribution of macroand microelements in the plant, varies significantly depending on their place and growing conditions.Conclusion. The maximum dioscin content was observed in the samples harvested in Moldova, and the minimum – in the samples from the nursery garden of the All-Russian Scientific Research Institute of medicinal and aromatic plants. The largest amount of protodioscin was found out in the samples from the Crimea, and the minimum – in the samples from Moldova. The carried out study of the elements content of Tríbulus terrestris L. showed that the habitats (geographical zones) in which the studied samples of raw materials had been were collected, affect the accumulation of the elements by the plant. Based on the data obtained, biological absorption series have been compiled for the samples from each habitat.

The effect of the methanolic extract of Alchornea cordifolia leaves on the fertility of senescent male rats was assessed in this study. 40 rats received daily distilled water, testosterone, 200 and 400 mg/kg of extract of Alchornea cordifolia. The reproductive organs weight, the gonadotropins, testosterone and cholesterol level, the sperm parameters, histology of the testes and epididymis were assessed. The weight of testes and prostate (400 mg/kg) significantly increased (p < 0.05) as well as the level of FHS (p < 0.001), LH and testosterone (p < 0.01) at a dose of 400 mg/kg, respectively, while the cholesterol decreased at a dose of 200 mg/kg (p < 0.05) and 400 mg/kg (p < 0.01) respectively. The testes and epididymis were full of spermatozoa particularly at a dose of 400 mg/kg. The sperm count and morphology significantly increased at both doses of 200 mg/kg (p < 0.01; p < 0.001) and 400 mg/kg (p < 0.001; p < 0.01) respectively. The sperm motion (PROG, VAP, VSL, VCL) (p < 0.001), (ALH, BCF) (p < 0.05) increased at a dose of 200 mg/kg and decreased at a dose of 400 mg/ kg. The overall results provide the strong evidence of the fertility potential of the methanolic extract of Alchornea cordifolia leaves in senescent male rats.
