Scorzonera ahmet‐duranii sp. nov. (Asteraceae) from southwest Anatolia, and its phylogenetic position

Abstract: Scorzonera ahmet‐duranii S. Makbul & Coskuncelebi sp. nov. (Asteraceae) is described and illustrated as a new species endemic to Turkey. It is morphologically similar to S. semicana DC., but differs by its rootstock, deeply undulating basal leaves and glabrous achenes. Additionally, the size and micro‐morphological properties of achenes and some anatomical traits of the leaf and stem are helpful in distinguishing these closely related taxa. A phylogenetic analysis based on nrDNA ITS sequence data showed that S… Show more

“…Since the genus Scorzonera in its wide sense was revised by Chamberlain (1975) to comprise 42 species in Turkey, many botanists have published new taxa (Coskuncelebi et al, 2012;Makbul et al, 2012) and new records (Doğan and Duran, 2010) from Turkey without considering classification. According to Makbul (2012), the genus Scorzonera s.l.…”

“…According to these authors, the adaxial epidermis bears 4-12 stomata, while the abaxial epidermis 6-14. In other taxa from this genus occurring in Turkey, the number of stomata on both epidermis surfaces was reported to be considerably greater [44]. Their density is related to the adaptation of plants to the climatic conditions of different regions [50].…”

“…The S. hispanica cultivars analyzed as well as the species S. ahmet-duranii and S. semicana described in the literature have amphistomatic leaves [44]. Anomocytic stomata were found in the leaf epidermis of the investigated cultivars and in other species from the genus Scorzonera [45,46].…”

“…The family Asteraceae has about 1186 species in 140 genera that are present in Turkey. Almost 446 endemic species occur all over Turkey (Erik & Tarıkahya, 2004;Duran et al, 2009;Makbul et al, 2012). Grierson (1975) also accepted the genus Inula, in the broader sense, while revising the genus for Flora of Turkey.…”
