In vivo EVALUATION OF PHOTOPROTECTION AGAINST CHRONIC ULTRAVIOLET‐A IRRADIATION BY A NEW SUNSCREEN MEXORYL® SX*

Abstract: In a previous study on the hairless mouse it was shown that sub-erythemal doses of pure UV-A enhanced the numerous changes normally observed during chronological aging. A new sunscreen (a bis-benzylidene campho sulfonic acid derivative) has been synthesized in our research laboratory (lambda max: 345 nm, epsilon: 47,000). Its photoprotective properties against UV-A induced damages were assessed in our mouse model. Three month old albino hairless mice were exposed for 1 y to suberythemal doses (35 J/cm2) of UV-… Show more

“…5,[9][10][11] There have been many reports that the application of sunscreens before UV exposure inhibits the photoaging of skin in animal models and in humans. 8,[12][13][14][15][16] Based on those findings, application of a sunscreen before UV exposure might be expected to inhibit an increase in skin elastase activity even when UVA is continuously irradiated. It is therefore important and interesting to investigate the effects of chronic UVA irradiation on elastase activity in skin protected with sunscreens before irradiation in an animal model.…”

“…It has been shown to prevent UVA-induced histochemical alterations in skin associated with photoaging in animal models. 99 In human beings, Mexoryl SX applied before UVA exposure has been shown to prevent UV-induced changes, which include pigmentation, epidermal hyperplasia, decrease of skin hydration, and elasticity. 100 Sunscreen containing Mexoryl SX significantly suppressed UVRinduced carcinogenesis in mice compared with preparation containing UVB absorber alone.…”
