Bean dwarf mosaic virus: a model system for the study of viral movement

Abstract: The symptom intensity in common bean plants depends on the stage of infection. Early infection of susceptible bean seedlings will result in severe stunting and dwarfing, leaf distortion and mottling or mosaic, as well as chlorotic or yellow spots or blotches. BDMV-infected plants usually abort their flowers or produce severely distorted pods. Late infection of susceptible plants or early infection of moderately resistant genotypes may show a mild mosaic, mottle and crumpling or an irregular distribution of var… Show more

“…Their genome consists of two components, one is called DNA-A and the other is DNA-B, both are ~2.7 kb in size (Lazarowitz, 1992). Both DNA-A and DNA-B perform different vital roles like viral DNA replication, encapsidation and transcription by DNA-A, while two movement proteins (BV1 and BC1) for translocation of virus by DNA-B (Levy and Tzfira, 2010). New world viruses related to the central and southern American strains such as Tomato leaf deformation virus is a new world virus.…”

“…For some bipartite begomoviruses, such as BDMV, the move-ment complex is not the virion, as capsid protein (CP) mutants are highly infectious (12,27,39,52).…”

“…Geminiviruses possess small circular single-stranded DNA (ssDNA) genomes encapsidated within twinned icosahedral virions, and they replicate in the nucleus via double-stranded DNA (dsDNA) forms (13,45). To cross nuclear and plasmodesmal boundaries, the bipartite geminiviruses of the genus Begomovirus, such as Bean dwarf mosaic virus (BDMV) (27), encode two proteins from the DNA-B component (35,45,52). The product of the BV1 gene is a nuclear shuttle protein (NSP), whereas that of the BC1 gene is an MP that mediates cell-to-cell trafficking of the infectious DNA through PD (9,24,27,35,45).…”
