Hypoglycaemic and Haematinic properties of ethanol leaf extract of Artocarpus heterophyllus in alloxan induced diabetic rats.

Abstract: Background: Anaemia is known to be associated with diabetes; moreover, with the increasing cases of diabetes there is need for the use of more affordable alternative herbal medicines for the treatment of diabetes and anaemia. The aim of this work was to evaluate the hypoglycaemic and haematinic properties of Artocarpus heteropyllus on diabetic rats. Materials and Methods: Ethanol leaf extract of Artocarpus heteropyllus was screened for phytochemicals and its acute toxicity was tested on mice. Induction of diab… Show more

“…The increase in the WBC count of group 3&4 could be a result of the extract reversal of the anemic condition after induction of phenylhydrazine drug. "The animal's immune system may assume that the cause of anemia could be a result of infection or disease and hence increase the production of white blood cells to fight such infections" (Okonkwo et al, 2015). WBC counts increase rapidly following a foreign attack on the system by pathogens and the normal physiologic response of the system will be to boost the body's defense mechanisms (Eyong et al, 2004).…”

“…Mice treated with PDSE post-AgNPs injection showed an improvement and increase in the total number of RBC, Hb level and Hct values compared with control mice. This could be due to PDSE contain high vitamins and iron levels, which have been shown to promote RBCs proliferation and Hb oxygen-carrying function, which accounts for the better effects of diabetic treatment (Afolayan and Yakubu, 2009;Okonkwo et al, 2015). Treatment of AgNPs injected mice with PDSE significantly restored the hematological parameters to reach their normal values.…”

“…Diabetes mellitus remains a burden world over despite the availability but unaffordable numerous antidiabetic drugs causing a rise in its prevalence with associated deaths and deformities associated with it [5]. There has been an increase in the cases of diabetes across the world due to an increase in the population, aging, increasing prevalence of obesity and physical in ability [6,7].…”

“…The fruits are globose orange with a unique large seed at the centre, with two to four seeds almost at the periphery of the pulp [8,9]. S. lehmbachii can be found in the tropical rain forest of the South-Eastern Nigeria and Cameroon [6,8]. Its root-bark water extract has been reported to possess anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties [8,10,11], antiabortificient activity [8,12], antidiuretic property [13,11], and anti-cholinergic property [8,14] and nil hepatic toxicity [8] in wistar rats.…”
