Hypoglycaemic activity of Spathodea campanulata stem bark decoction in mice

Abstract: Decoction of the stem bark of Spathotfeu cumpanulala (SC) exerted a hypoglycaemic activity in streptozotocin (SZ) diabetic mice. Later, the decoction, washed with chloroform, was divided in water and butanol fractions. Both had a hypoglycaemic activity but were devoid of any influence on insulin levels in SZ diabetic mice. The decoction also decreased blood glucose levels in a glucose tolerance test (GTT) in normal mice.

“…Throughout the study, the animals were housed as six animals per polypropylene cage (435 × 285 × 150 mm) and maintained in a 12-h dark/light cycle at room temperature with constant relative humidity (Nixonzima and Vllietinck, 1993). The rats were fed a standard pellet diet (M/S Hindustan Liver Ltd, India) and drinking water was given ad libitum.…”

“…2 The oral glucose tolerance test is a well-accepted and frequently used assay to screen for hypoglycemic activity. 3 In diabetes mellitus, the proportion of glycosylated hemoglobin increases substantially, and the amount of glycosylated hemoglobin reflects the extent as well as management of the diabetic condition. 4 Recently, investigators found that several plants and plant products showed unique hypoglycemic activities in diabetic animal models.…”

“…In Ghana the leafy aerial parts are used to treat boils and sores (Ayensu, 1979;Burkhill, 1985). S. campanula is widely distributed in Africa and the bark is used traditionally as an antimalarial, hypoglycaemic agent and also for the treatment of ulcers (Irvine, 1961;Makinde et al, 1988;Niyonzima et al, 1993). Phytochemical investigation of S. campanulata bark has shown the presence of triterpenes and sterols (Ngouela et al, 1991).…”
