Hygroscopic growth and measured and modeled critical super‐saturations of an atmospheric HULIS sample

Abstract: [1] An atmospheric HULIS (humic-like substance) sample dissolved in water was used to generate particles with different dry diameters. A HHTDMA (High Humidity Tandem Differential Mobility Analyzer) and LACIS (Leipzig Aerosol Cloud Interaction Simulator) were used to measure hygroscopic growth of the HULIS particles. LACIS also was used to measure the critical supersaturation for the activation of HULIS particles with dry diameters of 50, 75, 100, and 125 nm. Simple Köhler theory was used to simulate the measur… Show more

“…A detailed discussion of the SPE procedure, including column selection and performance, can be found in Varga et al (2001). In this work the ISOM fraction is hereafter referred to as HULIS, in consistency with literature (Kiss et al, 2005;Wex et al, 2007;Ziese et al, 2008). The extraction procedure of the HULIS was identical for the SMOCC and K-puszta samples.…”

“…Of this organic fraction, about 10-60% has been found to be water soluble organic carbon (WSOC) (Krivacsy et al, 2001;Kleefeld et al, 2002). Until now, the knowledge about the hygroscopic growth and CCN properties of the multitude of water soluble organic compounds found in aerosol particles has been very limited (Kanakidou et al, 2005;Dinar et al, 2006Dinar et al, , 2007Taraniuk et al, 2007;Wex et al, 2007).…”

“…the minimum S required for the particles of a certain size to activate into cloud drops (e.g. Svenningsson et al, 1992;Rissler et al, 2005;Khvorostyanov and Curry, 2007;Wex et al, 2007). One such approach is the hygroscopicity parameter κ, also known as "kappa", a unitless number describing the cloud condensation nucleus activity (Petters and Kreidenweis, 2007).…”

“…Therefore, one-parameter approximations were developed (e.g. Petters and Kreidenweis, 2007;Wex et al, 2007) which are applicable for the description of particle hygroscopic growth as well as activation properties. Oneparameter approaches are also well suited as a simple mea- Fig.…”
