Hydrogenation of fatty oils with palladium catalysts. V. Products of the tall oil industry

Abstract: Catalysts.Con(litious were fouml for reducing tall oil distillate to an iodine mmfl)e)' of 22 with a sufliciently small :mlount of palladium catalyst to make the pro(,(,ss (:om)nercially feasible. The Ol)crating eon(lith)ns were 2()0~ and 2,600 psi. Tall oil fatty acids were reduced with palladium and th(! concentrntion of linoleic acid, cis-oleie acid, saturate([ acid, and trans isomers were (lctcrmim~d as a function of io(lilm retail)or. Thc fivc-platinunt group metals (Pt, Pd, Jr, Rh, Rut were compar(,(l as… Show more

“…Pt with its low double bond isomerization activity [24,25] was chosen as the active metal phase in the hydrogenation catalysts. The characteristics of the commercial supports are given in Table 1, while the results of the hydrogenation reactions with some of them are shown in Table 4.…”

“…Pt was chosen as the active metal because of its low double bond isomerization characteristics [24,25]. Ideally, only trans-methyl esters of fatty acids should enter the pores of the zeolite and be hydrogenated selectively on the intracrystalline metal phase.…”

“…Zajcew worked out satisfactory and economic processing conditions for the use of palladium in the productions of margarine stocks (25) including hydrogenated whale oil (35), shortening (1,36) and cocoa-butter substitutes (37) as well as the technical products castor wax (38) hydrogenated tall oil distillate (39) partially hydrogenated tall oil fatty acids, and fully hydrogenated fatty acids of various origins (10). Palladium is especially useful in the hydrogenation of fatty acids for, unlike nickel, it does not form soaps.…”

“…The catalysts used in the industrial hydrogenation process are supported catalysts [7,8] based on nickel [9][10][11], copper [12], noble metals [13][14][15][16][17][18]. Palladium catalyst was suggested to be more selective than Ni system if the process of hydrogenation proceeds at low temperature and strict control of catalyst texture and hydrogen pressure [19,20].…”
