Hydrides in young stellar objects: Radiation tracers in a protostar-disk-outflow system

Abstract: Context. Hydrides of the most abundant heavier elements are fundamental molecules in cosmic chemistry. Some of them trace gas irradiated by UV or X-rays. Aims. We explore the abundances of major hydrides in W3 IRS5, a prototypical region of high-mass star formation. Methods. W3 IRS5 was observed by HIFI on the Herschel Space Observatory with deep integration ( 2500 s) in 8 spectral regions. Results. The target lines including CH, NH, H 3 O + , and the new molecules SH + , H 2 O + , and OH + are detected. The H… Show more

“…As mentioned earlier, many small molecules have their first few rotational transitions at these higher frequencies, and surveys with HIFI resulted in the first reported detections of SH + (Benz et al 2010 . Additionally, full spectral line surveys provided robust constraints on the excitation conditions and populations of larger molecules (>5 atoms) in a variety of extraordinary molecular sources such as SgrB2(N) ) and Orion KL (Crockett et al 2014).…”

“…Submillimeter spectra of H 3 O + are usually observed from warm and dense star-forming regions, where hydronium is one of the most abundant molecules [32]. Up to now deuterated hydronium was not observed from the interstellar medium.…”

“…The SH + radical ion, sulfanylium, was not detected in the interstellar medium (ISM) until as late as 2010 [56]. It is however, an important tracer of gas condensations in dense regions and also probes the warm surface layers of photo-dominated regions (PDR) [57].…”
