Hybrid PWM Strategy for Power Efficiency Improvement of 5-Level TNPC Inverter and Current Distortion Compensation Method

Abstract: This paper proposes a pulse width modulation (PWM) strategy for improving the efficiency of a 5-level H-bridge T-type neutral point clamped (TNPC) inverter. In the case of the proposed PWM strategy, unlike the conventional PWM strategy in which both of the switching legs of the H-bridge inverter operate at a high frequency, one switching leg of the inverter operates at a low frequency. As the switching frequency is lowered, the switching loss is reduced, this improving the efficiency of the system. The duty re… Show more

“…The Figure 16 shows the structure of a multi-level converter based on the series connection of single-phase inverters (Hbridge, or partial cell). The structure of a five-stage inverter arm of H-bridge cascade type is the cascade combination of two conventional single-phase inverters in full bridge [10][11][12], so that the output voltage of the inverter obtained is the sum of output voltages of the two conventional inverters. The five possible states or switching sequences are summarized in Table 4.…”

“…Thus, the stacked connection of both cells creates the converter voltage v c , which is commanded by its reference v * c . The combination of both methods is simpler in respect to the space vector modulation (SVM) [27]. Finally, the implementation of this modulation technique is depicted in the block diagram of Figure 3, where simple comparators and two carrier signals are required to implement the proposed technique.…”
