Human papillomavirus infection and cervical cancer precursor lesions in women living by Amazon rivers: investigation of relations with markers of oxidative stress

Abstract: Objective To investigate the relation between oxidative stress markers, human papillomavirus infection and cervical cancer precursor lesions. Methods The study comprised women aged 14 to 60 years living in communities located by Amazon rivers in the state of Pará (Itaituba, Limoeiro do Ajuru and Bragança, 126, 68 and 43 women respectively). Papanicolau smears and polymerase chain reaction tests for human papillomavirus DNA detection were performed. Blood samples were collected to test malondialdehyde, total and… Show more

“…These metabolites may represent oxidative stress and total glutathione depletion. By‐products of oxidative stress may cause irreversible damage to membrane lipids, proteins, and DNA, and have been implicated as potential co‐factors in HPV carcinogenesis and persistence . Future longitudinal studies designed to establish the association of these compounds with disease progression, in combination with specific hrHPV strains, are merited.…”

“…Human papillomavirus (HPV) infection is one of the leading causes of cervical cancer and is associated with a majority of cervical cancer cases ( 8 , 9 ). The primary causes of mortality associated with cervical cancer are unsuccessful surgical treatment, tumor recurrence and metastasis ( 10 ).…”

“…In these studies, plasma total glutathion levels were reported as low and oxidized glutathione levels were reported as high in patients with preinvasive lesions compared to patients without preinvasive lesions [17,18]. They added that this relationship may be related to HPV positivity.…”

“…Also, HPV increases the ability of infected cells to live in an oxidative environment [23]. In some of the studies conducted on cervical preinvasive lesions in the literature, oxidative stress indicators were associated with HPV, while the relationship between preinvasive lesions were not determined [18]. In addition, there are investigations showing that oxidative stress is associated with both HPV and dysplasia grade [24].…”
