Evaluation of Dynamic Thiol-Disulfide Balance in Preinvasive Lesions of the Cervix

Abstract: Purpose: This study aimed to determine the potential clinical use of dynamic thiol disulfide balance in cases with preinvasive lesions of the cervix. Methods: One hundred and sixteen patients with high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesion, one hundred patients with low-grade squamous intraepithelial lesion and one hundred and ten healthy controls were enrolled in the study. A fully automated colorimetric system was used to determine the levels of thiol-disulfide parameters. The ischemia-modified albumin, total… Show more

“…The mechanism of how this elevated thiol levels act is not clear, but it might be through its responsibility of the increased keratinocyte proliferation in the psoriasis disease [42]. The present study results measured an increase in blood disulfide levels indicating that a shift in thiol/disulfide imbalance is significant in psoriasis thus causes a highly significant increased oxidative stress as a result of tissue inflammation [39]. Disulfide bridges play an important role in maintaining the stability of mature keratin [47].…”

“…The formed disulfides are converted back into thiols by the cleavage of S-S bonds [37,38]. The Dynamic thiol/ disulfide homeostasis is responsible for many processes such as antioxidant defense, regulation of enzyme functions, signal transduction, apoptosis, and other processes [19] and the alteration in the thiol/disulfide balance appears to be involved in the pathogenesis of many diseases, especially diseases that are characterized by chronic inflammation [39][40][41].…”

“…Therefore, for example, HPV E6 decreases the level of enzymatic antioxidants SOD and GPX and enhances ROS production [ 150 ]. HPV helps infected cells adapt to a pro-oxidant microenvironment [ 21 ]. Low molecular weight thiols have many functions in the human body, including antioxidant defense, cell signaling and modulation of the immune response [ 151 ].…”

“…Based on these findings, elevated serum thiol levels may represent a mechanism for blocking free thiols in the HPV structure [ 44 ]. Changes in the thiol-disulfide balance have been detected in premalignant and malignant lesions caused by HPV [ 21 , 152 ]. Regarding warts, we identified two studies that evaluated TDH.…”
