Human nail dust and precipitating antibodies to Trichophyton rubrum in chiropodists

Abstract: The toe-nail dust produced in chiropodial practice causes allergic hypersensitivity and Trichophyton rubrum is the most common fungal cause of nail dystrophy. Use of drills and burrs to reduce the thickness of hyperkeratotic nails generates dust and chiropodists develop precipitins to T. rubrum. A survey into the prevalence of these antibodies in 11-2% of state-registered chiropodists is described and 14% of the profession estimated to have antibodies to T. rubrum. In response to a questionnaire 49% stated tha… Show more

“…180 Occupational exposure to airborne Trichophyton in nail dust has been shown to induce nasal and eye symptoms in chiropodists. 181 Sensitization to Trichophyton is also reported to be a risk factor for more severe disease among the general asthmatic population. 182 Some allergenic proteins from fungi of the genus Trichophyton have been identified and approved by the WHO/IUIS Allergen Nomenclature Sub-committee.…”

“…The possibility of transmission, by aerosolisation, of blood and body fluids of hepatitis B or HIV, 15 or through the conjunctiva 16 17 exists. The smaller airborne particulates create an aerosol with distribution throughout the respiratory system [18][19][20][21] and damage to immunocompromised clients. 22…”

“…However, there is no data to subscribe to this view. Human nail dust, partly mimicking dust, has been reported to cause different respiratory and nonrespiratory illnesses (Abramson and Wilton 1985;Davies and Ganderton 1975;McLarnon et al 2005, Duell et al 1991Health and Safety Executive Publications 1991;Millar 2000;Davies et al 1983;Ward 1995).…”
