Human Arbovirus Infections Along the South Coast of New South Wales

Abstract: Summary The prevalence of antibodies in human sera from the south coast of New South Wales to four arboviruses, isolated from mosquitoes collected along the south coast, was determined in an attempt to estimate the importance of these viruses in human infection. Only two viruses, Barmah Forest and Gan Gan, were considered to be of any significance.

“…annuIirostris mosquitoes collected in 1974 in northern Victoria [116] and characterised as an alphavirus, despite cross-reactions with Umbre virus, a bunyavirus [45]. Human infection causing an epidemic polyarthritis-like disease was first reported in 1986 [149], and the virus was successfully cultivated from a patient in 1988 [134]. Sporadic cases of BF infection have been reported from New South Wales [12,81] The first major serologically confirmed outbreak occurred in 1992 in the Northern Territory [119].…”

“…coast south from Sydney revealed antibodies to Ross River (RR) virus in an average 7% of human sera, 25% of cow sera and 65% of horse sera (Cloonan et al 1982 a, b). In addition, antibodies in humans to Barmah Forest (BF) virus and Gan Gan (GG) virus were found to be relatively prevalent at 4.7% and 5.8% respectively (Vale et al 1986).…”
