How many factors does the sense of community index assess?

Abstract: Studies of university students’ sense of community (SOC) use various scales, one of which is the widely used Sense of Community Index (SCI), conceptualized as a 4‐factor model: membership, influence, needs fulfillment, and shared emotional connection. Research has been unable to show a reliable 4‐factor solution. One possible explanation may be that negatively worded items contribute to lack of model fit, which would be consistent with the claim that SOC was conceptualized as a unipolar positive construct. “…The Sense of Community Index, a 12-item true or false self-report measure that depicts a person's sense of connection to a place or community (42) was administered to the responding parent. This is a psychometrically adequate tool with higher score indicating more attachment and connection to the community (43). Due to non-normality of the data, the SDQ subscale and total scores, and parental Sense of Community scores were transformed to standardised scores for further analysis.…”

“…It is equivalent to the sense of membership, mutuality, and voluntary interdependency, which can reduce the perception of solitude, loneliness, and anonymousness. The measurement of the SC has been questioned because the Sense of Community Index (Perkins, Florin, Rich, Wandersman, & Chavis, 1990) has shown unstable psychometric properties (Loomis & Wright, 2018). In addition, the concept of community itself presents several definitions (Silva & Hespanhol, 2016).…”

“…It was identified that the structural disadvantage caused by poverty reinforced the relations between neighbors, with a collective action in solving the problems (Bolland, & Debra, 2002; Walton, 2016). Thus, it is necessary to develop more research with people in situations of poverty in peripheral contexts (Flaherty, Zwick, & Bouchey, 2014; Lardier, Reid, & Garcia‐Reid, 2018; Loomis & Wright, 2018; Peterson, Speer, & Hughey, 2006).…”
