How do community pharmacists conceptualise and operationalise self-care support of long-term conditions (LTCs)? An English cross-sectional survey

Abstract: Community pharmacists in this study conceptualised and operationalised self-care support of long-term conditions (LTCs) from a narrow, medicines-focussed perspective, rather than from a multifaceted, patient-focussed perspective. A concerted and coherent strategy that builds on the strengths, and tackles the identified barriers is needed if community pharmacy is to improve contributions to self-care support of LTCs.

“…The barriers identified broadly align with previous literature, which identified that access to GP medical records would improve integration within a primary care pathway for people with long‐term conditions (Hindi et al., 2019; Ogunbayo et al., 2016). Workload was also cited as a key barrier, and a recent community pharmacy workforce survey has identified an increased vacancy rate in all community pharmacy roles, including vacancies of 20% for pharmacy technicians, 16% for pharmacists and 9% for dispensing assistants (NHS Health Education England, 2023).…”

“…Lack of access to medical records has been identified as a barrier to community pharmacists’ role expansion here, as in previous studies [6165]. Having an integrated information system which enables community pharmacists’ read-write access to patient records may enhance communication with GPs and ensure safe provision of extended services.…”

“…Community pharmacists have expanded their roles in recent years to include giving health care advice to people with acute and chronic illnesses (Butler et al, 2017). Community pharmacists are in a unique position to help patients managing chronic illnesses in the light of their expertise, their regular interaction with patients and accessibility (Bailey et al, 2016;Ogunbayo et al, 2017). Pharmacists have the duty of providing pharmaceutical care to asthmatic patients and the quality of care depends greatly on their attitudes and knowledge of pathophysiology and pharmacotherapy of the disease (Watkins et al, 2016;Hersberger, Messerli, 2016).…”
