Hot deformation behaviour of bamboo leaf ash–silicon carbide hybrid reinforced aluminium based composite

Abstract: Isothermal compression testing of BLA-SIC hybrid reinforced Aluminium composites was performed on Gleeble 3500 thermomechanical simulator under different deformation temperatures (300–400 °C) and strain rates (0.01–1 s‑1). The flow behaviour and the softening mechanisms were established using the trend of the stress-strain curves, activation energy and microstructural examination. The results showed that flow stress increased with decreasing temperature; but was not entirely strain rate sensitive − a character… Show more

“…Ash produced during the incineration of bamboo leaf was also used as a reinforcing phase in Al based metal matrix composites. Alaneme et al [57][58][59] reported the composition of bamboo leaf ash as SiO 2 (76.4 wt%), Al 2 O 3 (5.04 wt%), MgO (2.05 wt%), K 2 O (5.76 wt%), CaO (6.68 wt%) and Fe 2 O 3 . In these studies, bamboo leaf ash (<50 µm) particles was used together with either Al 2 O 3 (28 µm) or SiC (30 µm) particles to prepare hybrid composites by two-step stir casting.…”

“…In these studies, bamboo leaf ash (<50 µm) particles was used together with either Al 2 O 3 (28 µm) or SiC (30 µm) particles to prepare hybrid composites by two-step stir casting. While superior fracture toughness was obtained for all the hybrid composite formulations, the increasing bamboo leaf ash content caused an insignificant drop in hardness and tensile strength [57,58]. Under tribological test conditions, the hybrid composites showed wear rates comparable to those reinforced with only SiC or Al 2 O 3 particles.…”

“…Many researchers have worked on the addition of agro-wastes which include coconut shell ash, fly ash, RHA, palm kernel ash and snail shell. 1621 They have used reinforcing materials to improve the engineering properties of aluminium composites.…”
