Aim: The aim of the research study is to identify the selected indicators of mental health, such as meaning of life, experience of well-being, hope, and feelings of loneliness and depression in the elderly participating in the University of the Third Age, in relation to their age and gender. Design: A quantitative descriptive study. Methods: The selection of respondents was deliberate. The sample consisted of 147 seniors with a mean age of 67.4 (± 4.9) years enrolled at the University of the Third Age at Jessenius Faculty of Medicine, Comenius University. Data were collected by means of self-assessment scales -the Life Meaningfulness Scale, Snyder´s Hope Scale, the Emotional Habitual Subjective Well-being Scale, the Loneliness Scale, and the Geriatric Depression Scale. Results: Seniors considered their life meaningful, and expressed a high level of hope. Their emotions were predominately positive. We identified low levels of loneliness and found no indication of depressed mood. We identified significant differences between men and women in evaluation indicators of mental health only in the frequency of positive emotions. Conclusion: The study indicates the presence of salutogenic factors affecting the mental health of the sample of seniors in the process of active aging. The results could form the basis for implementing preventive strategies in clinical nursing practice.

Control de la acción y disposición a la esperanza: Un estudio de su incidencia en la autorregulación del aprendizaje -5 -Control de la acción y disposición a la esperanza: Un estudio de su incidencia en la autorregulación del aprendizaje ResumenIntroducción. En el presente estudio se examina la incidencia del control de acción (i.e., separación, iniciativa, y persistencia) y la disposición a la esperanza (i.e., pensamiento orientado a caminos, y pensamiento orientado a la agencia) en el uso de estrategias de aprendizaje autorregulado (i.e., cognitivas, metacognitivas, y gestión de recursos) y en el logro académico.Método. Resultados. Los resultados de los análisis del camino muestran que los dos componentes de la disposición a la esperanza influyeron en el uso de casi todas las estrategias de aprendizaje.La separación y la iniciativa influían sobre todo en la gestión del tiempo y el entorno de estudio, y en la regulación del esfuerzo. La persistencia y el pensamiento orientado a caminos contribuyeron de forma independiente a la varianza del logro académico, mientras que la metacognición, y la gestión del tiempo y del entorno de estudio mediaron los efectos de separación, iniciativa y control del pensamiento.Discusión y Conclusión. Introduction Hope is a positive, future-thinking construct that is highly related to pursuing and achieving our personal goals. Considering its relevance for well-being and psychological adjustment, the purpose of this study is to explore the psychometric properties of the Spanish version of the Dispositional Hope Scale (DHS) (Snyder et al., 1991), its relation with important psychological health indicators (depression, hopelessness, optimism, general self-efficacy and quality of life), and examine the possible differences between clinical (CP) and general populations (GP).Method Sample was composed of 290 volunteers. Measures of hopelessness, depression, optimism, quality of life, self-efficacy, and positive-negative affect were administered. Hope was assessed again 1 month later to collect test-retest data.Results CFA supports the unidimensional structure. In addition, good internal consistency and test-retest values were found. Further, based on the one-factor model, results revealed that the Spanish DHS has strong factorial invariance across populations (GP and CP). The differences in the hope levels detected between CP and GP appear to be mainly associated with positive affect and depressive symptoms. 2Conclusions Results broaden the existing data about the Spanish DHS and support its usefulness not only for research, but also for clinical purposes.
