Homocysteine in breast cyst fluid

Abstract: Mean levels of Hcy, Cys, Cys-Gly, Na+/K+, E2 and PregS in the fluid filling the breast cysts were significantly higher than the corresponding plasma concentrations. In addition, a negative correlation was found between cystic Hcy and the Na+/K+ ratio (Rs = -0.72, P = 0.003) and positive correlations between cyst Hcy and estradiol (Rs = 0.64, P = 0.018) and Hcy and PregS (Rs = 0.60, P = 0.025). Conclusion The study provides the first evidence of thiol concentrations in the breast cyst fluid. The finding of a ne… Show more

“…Adrenal stimulation in children increased PregS parallel to cortisol levels enabling the usage of PregS in diagnosis of various adrenal and pituitary diseases in children [27,42]. A more general role of PregS became evident by reports of changed PregS levels in disease states [43,44,45,46,47]. For example, PregS serum concentrations are reduced in hypothyroidism and 7fold increase in hyperthyroidism [46].…”

“…In fact, protein ubiquitination may be important to understand the proteolytic cascade during breast carcinogenesis [230], improving the knowledge of the proteolytic/antiproteolytic ratio (e.g., MMP/TIMPs balance) [229]. Enterolactone [210] Homocysteine and thiol compounds [223,224] Mitogenic peptides [99,204,225,226] Mutagens [227,228] (2) a cytometric analysis of phenotypic markers of floating cells in BCFs through the identification of peculiar surface antigens (e.g., CD10 and 13 for metalloproteinases, CD11 for integrins, CD30 and 40 for growth factors, CD66 for CEA, etc.) may help to distinguish apocrine metaplasia or different types of apocrine cysts or the relationship between various apocrine cysts and the precancerous epithelial proliferation of the mammary gland.…”

“…Hyperhomocysteinemia has also been related to nutritional deficiency (folate or cobalamin) [13], disease (diabetes) or genetic factors [9,14]. In addition to increased cardiovascular disease risk [6,7], hyperhomocysteinemia is also a risk factor for stroke, tumor [15], Alzheimer's disease and dementia [16].…”
