Fifty-two grass pea (Lathyrus sativus L.) genotypes were investigated in terms of agronomic performance, protein and ODAP (b-N-oxalyl-l-diamino-propionic acid) content under semi-arid conditions of Inner Anatolia during 2013 and 2014. High variation was observed among genotypes, especially for seed yield and ODAP content. Seed yield ranged from 1142.4 kg/ha up to 2046.4 kg/ha with a mean of 1521.1 kg/ha, ODAP content in seed varied from 2.62 mg/g up to 5.59 mg/ g with an average of 3.85 mg per g and seed protein ratio was between 26.77% and 30.20% over the genotypes and years. A significant and negative correlation of ODAP was noted with seed yield (r = -0.38). This association is very encouraging for breeders to improve new varieties having high seed yield and low ODAP content. The results from this study indicated that ten grass pea genotypes consisting two ICARDA lines and eight landraces from Turkey recorded superior with low ODAP content and and high seed yield (changed between 1680.9 kg/ha and 2046.4 kg/ha). So, these may be potential candidates for new varieties.

Lathyrus sativus L. is considered one of the most promising calorie and protein sources for the vast, expanding populations living in drought-prone and marginalized areas of the world. This study was conducted to determine the β-N-oxalyl-L-2,3-diaminopropionic acid (β-ODAP), L-homoarginine, and asparagine content of a total of 173 Lathyrus sativus L. genotypes, of which 93 were collected under natural conditions in Antalya. The β-ODAP, L-homoarginine, and asparagine content of Lathyrus sativus L. genotypes ranged from 1.55 to 20.8 mg/g seeds, 1.35 to 11.64 mg/g seeds, and 0.59 to 5.22 mg/g seeds, respectively. Turkey and one L. sativus cultivar, Gürbüz, were evaluated with ISSR markers in this study to molecular characterization. Three ISSR primers were used and 45 DNA fragment were evaluated, of which 44 bands were polymorphic. The frequencies of scored bands ranged from 0.009 to 0.888 and averaged 0.363. The genotypes MLT04 and NEV02 had high similarity with 0.825 according to pairwise grouping. The furthest pairwise group was Gürbüz and MLT02 with 0.244. The nearest genotype to Gürbüz was CNR03 with 0.577. The pairwise genetic distance between L. clymenum and L. sativus ranged from 0.353 (accession NEV01) to 0.637 (accession DEN04) and pairwise genetic distance to the cultivar Gürbüz was 0.375. Assessment of genetic relationships among Lathyrus genotypes made two main groups. One of them covered only Gürbüz variety and the other covered 52 Lathyrus landrace. L. sativus and L. clymenum separated prominently in the second group.
