HL‐A Antigens in Hodgkin's Disease and Other Lymphomas

Abstract: Absrracr. 35 patients with Hodgkin's disease, 13 patients with other lymphomas and 26 control subjects have been typed for 8 HL-A antigens. The frequency of HL-A8 and HL-A7 was higher among the patients with Hodgkin's disease and other lymphomas than among control subjects. In contrast to findings reported by others we did not find any difference in HL-A5 frequency between patients with Hodgkin's disease and control subjects.

“…Enhanced susceptibility has been suggested in certain haplotypes (Walford et al, 1970;Thorsby et ai, 1971) but this is also contested (Lawler et a2, 1971). A similar discrepancy is found in Hodgkin's disease where a positive correlation with HL-A 5 has been found (Amiel, 1967), and confirmed (Zervas et al, 1970), only to be questioned in a larger series (Sybesma et al, 1972). Several factors may account for these differences.…”

“…When the results of various investigations (showing apart a high HL-A5 or W5 frequency in several cases) are pooled together, no correlation between Hodgkin's disease and a high HL-A5 or W5 frequency appears [3]. In our series of patients with Hodgkin's disease, we previously found a normal HL-A5 frequency [24].…”

“…Persons with sufficient antibody formation are called 'responders', while patients without sufficient antibody formation are called 'non-responders'. Details on methods and sera used for HL-A typing have been published elsewhere [24].…”
