Historiography of psychology in Brazil: Pioneer works, recent developments.

Abstract: The evolution of the historiography of psychology in Brazil is surveyed, to describe how the field has evolved from the seminal works of the pioneer, mostly self-taught, psychologists, to the now professional historians working from a variety of theoretical models and methods of inquiry. “…Psychology in Argentina between 1890 and 1920 was strongly oriented towards psychopathological matters and was thoroughly permeated by the thought of French pathologists like Ribot, Grasset and Charcot (Klappenbach, 2013;Piñero, 1988a;Stagnaro, 2000), thus making nonprofessional psychologists -philosophers, essayists, and psychiatrists alike-an important collective in the definition and study of psychotherapyrelated phenomena (Klappenbach, 2006a;Vilanova, 1996a). Simultaneously, in a positivistic vein similar to the one present in many other Latin-American nations around the time (Campos, Jacó-Vilela, & Massimi, 2010;Mardones Barrera, Fierro, & Salas, 2016), what classified as mental illnesses or alienations in Argentina towards the XX century often were the issues that the government, or more precisely the dominant elite, perceived as detrimental to the process of national organization and to the formation of a common national character, in the wake of the processes of massive immigration of Europeans to South America (Ablard, 10,400 retarded people in the country.
