Historical Photos and Visualizations: Potential for Research

Abstract:
Abstract. The interdisciplinary research group on four-dimensional research and communication of urban history (Urban History 4D) aims to investigate and develop methods and technologies to access extensive repositories of historical media and their contextual information in a spatial model, with an additional temporal component. This will make content accessible to different target groups, researchers and the public, via a 4D Browser and an Augmented Reality app for mobil… Show more

“…Similarly, Dewitz et al. (2019), Maiwald, Bruschke, Lehmann, and Niebling (2019), Schindler and Dellaert (2012) propose these methods to match images and to orient them in a 4D virtual environment in order to reconstruct historical 3D models of cities and to navigate the resulting model and the multimedia documents. They also allow the display of quantitative information about the multimedia documents such as the number of images in a certain area or heat maps based on image orientations.…”

“…Several proposals have been put forward for integrating multimedia documents into 3D urban environments, but they mainly focus on an integration at the visual level (Brivio et al., 2013; Dewitz et al., 2019; Schindler & Dellaert, 2012; Snavely, Seitz, and Szeliski, 2006). However, this choice constrains the integration of multimedia documents to iconographies which are only a subset of available multimedia documents.…”

“…Numerous empirical investigations have shown that students embrace 3D-printed materials as learning resources (e.g., Li et al, 2018;Mogali et al, 2018), particularly when they are involved in creating these models (Backhouse et al, 2019). In addition, such printed models could be accompanied by digital applications, such as augmented reality (Dewitz et al, 2019). Similarly, physical props can be used as useful learning metaphors (Astrachan, 1998;Bragdon et al, 2010), supporting knowledge acquisition and skill transfer.…”

“…For repairing and preservation of paper-based photos, the Smithsonian Institution (Washington, DC, USA) suggested maintaining low-temperature and lowhumidity conditions on a long-term basis [19]. On the other hand, digital storage offers an effective way of permanently preserving the image information, and this approach has been internationally recognized [20][21][22][23][24]. So far, digital technology is used to repair photos Polymers 2021, 13, 3894 2 of 10 with slight curling, deformation, or creasing, thus greatly improving the image quality.…”
