SUMMARY:We studied the gill epithelium of juveniles of Odontesthes bonariensis using scanning electron microscopy with a particular interest in the relationship between cell morphology and the different functional aspects of gills. The specimens used were collected in Laguna de los Padres, Buenos Aires Province, Argentina. The gill filaments or primary lamellae are arranged in two rows along the convex outer face of the gill arch forming the anterior and posterior hemibranchiae. On its concave inner face, each arch supports two rows of gill rakers forming the pharyngeal region wall. The primary lamellae are lined by a stratified epithelium made up of polygonal cells with well-defined outlines and cell membrane microfolds. Several mucous and chloride cells were observed in the primary lamellae. The epithelial cells of the secondary lamellae have ill-defined outlines and few microfolds. Both the arches and gill rakers are covered by a stratified epithelium of polygonal cells, among which mucous cells and taste corpuscles are abundant. The ultrastructural analysis of gills of O. bonariensis contributes to the advancement of knowledge of the organ histophysiology and of future histopathological studies.

Growth and histology of intestine and liver of carp fed diets with or devoid of fish meal (FM) was studied. Carp were fed four experimental diets formulated to contain 38% protein for 90 days. FM was incorporated at 30% in feed A, 15% in feed B and C, and was completely replaced with a mixture of plant proteins in feed D. Feed C and D were supplemented with methionine and lysine. The results showed that carp fed feed D had the lowest weight gain, length and height compared to the other three diets, whereas no differences were observed between A, B and C for the measured morphometric parameters. Inclusion of methionine and lysine tended to improve SGR of carp fed feed C compared to those fed feed B, but growth rate was lower than carp fed feed A. FCR differed for nearly 90 % between the FM rich and solely plant protein diet. No major pathological changes were recorded. At the end of the study shortening of intestinal folds' length was found for all groups, except for fish fed feed D. The height of enterocytes was significantly lower for carp fed diet D compared to other diets. According to the results obtained the best diet is feed A, but feed C with 15% FM and added methionine and lysine represents an acceptable replacement due to its lower price and effect on growth that are the most similar to feed A.

This study investigated the effects of substituting boiled sunflower seed meal (BSSM) for soybean meal (SBM) on the organosomatic indices and histopathological changes in the liver, kidney and intestine of Clarias gariepinus juveniles for fifteen weeks. BSSM was substituted for SBM at 0, 20, 40, 60, 80 and 100% in formulating six isonitrogenous (40% crude protein) and isocaloric (4651.5 Kcal/kg) diets. Diets were fed twice daily to triplicate groups of 360 C. gariepinus juveniles inside eighteen rectangular tanks (20 fish per tank). The result showed that hepatosomatic index (HSI) was significantly highest (3.11%) in the fish fed 0% BSSM diet and lowest (0.87%) in those fed 100% BSSM inclusion. HSI values progressively decreased with increasing inclusion level of BSSM. Kidney-somatic index (KSI) was highest (0.74%) in fish fed 20% BSSM inclusion and least (0.32%) in those fed 100% inclusion. Intestino-somatic index (ISI) was superior (3.82%) in fish fed 100% BSSM inclusion and least (3.16%) in those fed 40%. The liver, kidney and intestine of fish fed 0 and 20% BSSM inclusions showed no visible signs of damage. However, fish fed higher BSSM inclusions (>20%) revealed extensive hepatic degeneration, periportal congestions and severe diffuse cytoplasmic vacuolations of hepatocytes. Kidney tubules of fish fed higher BSSM inclusions exhibited diffuse interstitial congestions, diffuse swelling, epithelial vacuolations and degeneration as well as necrosis. Intestinal changes in fish fed higher BSSM inclusions included reduced sub-mucosal width, markedly stunted villi, moderate erosion of villi's epithelia, hyperplastic villi, necrosis of enterocytes and inflammatory cells in villi's lamina propria. Inclusion of boiled sunflower seed meal beyond 20% in C. gariepinus' diet could cause adverse histological alterations.
