Histology and Histochemistry of the Pharyngeal Cavity and Oesophagus of the Silverside Odontesthes bonariensis (Cuvier and Valenciennes)

Abstract: The histology of the pharyngeal cavity and oesophagus of the freshwater 'silverside'Odontesthes bonariensis (Cuvier and Valenciennes) and the characteristics of their mucous cells were investigated. The histological characterization of its digestive wall revealed that the mucosa is thrown with longitudinal folds. The epithelium covering the folds was stratified with abundant mucous cells and gustative corpuscles, which are lacking in the oesophagus. The muscularis mucosa was absent. The submucosa presented the… Show more

“…Of late years, the silverside has been used in several studies of the digestive and neuroendocrine systems (Díaz et al, 2006;Somoza et al, 2008;Vigliano et al, 2011). Nevertheless, previous records on the respiratory system are scarce.…”

“…Evaluation of histological structure of digestive organs in fish fed new ingredients provide valuable information about digestive capacity and potential health effects of new diets (Caballero et al, 2003;Diaz et al, 2006), but not many investigations have been carried out with carp (Viola et al, 1982;Fontagne et al, 1998). Morphological changes in the distal intestine (Van den Ingh et al, 1991;Baeverfjord and Krogdahl, 1996;Refstie et al, 2000;Krogdahl et al, 2003;Uran et al, 2008;Knudsen et al, 2008) is responsible for the retardation of growth seen in response to SBM-based diets.…”

“…The increase in HSI value in an ideal environment is related to normal liver growth but, in cases of pollution, liver enlargement is associated with hyperplasia (Hoque et al, 1998 Histopathological observations on C. gariepinus fed graded levels of BSSM diets Examination of the liver, kidney and intestine was done because of their physiological importance during absorption and metabolism of chemicals (Roberts, 1989). Evaluation of histological structure of digestive organs in fish fed new dietary ingredients generates valuable information about their digestive capacity and the potential health effects of such diets (Diaz et al, 2006). Incorporating different inclusion levels of boiled sunflower seed meal (BSSM) in the diets of C. gariepinus juveniles in this study caused varying degrees of histopathological changes in their liver cells (hepatocytes) such as mild and severe diffuse vacuolations of the hepatocytes, vacuolar degeneration, some loci of extensive fatty infiltration, extensive hepatic degeneration and periportal venous congestion.…”
