Highly Porous, Rigid-Rod Polyamide Aerogels with Superior Mechanical Properties and Unusually High Thermal Conductivity

Abstract: We report here the fabrication of polyamide aerogels composed of poly-p-phenylene-terephthalamide, the same backbone chemistry as DuPont's Kevlar. The all-para-substituted polymers gel without the use of cross-linker and maintain their shape during processing-an improvement over the meta-substituted cross-linked polyamide aerogels reported previously. Solutions containing calcium chloride (CaCl) and para-phenylenediamine (pPDA) in N-methylpyrrolidinone (NMP) at low temperature are reacted with terephthaloyl ch… Show more

“…Carbon aerogels were firstly prepared by polymerizing resorcinol with formaldehyde (RF) under alkaline conditions, followed with supercritical drying and carbonization . Since then, more and more monomers were used, such as melamine‐formaldehyde (MF),, phenol‐formaldehyde (PF), cresol‐formaldehyde (CF), phenol‐furfural, and some polymers, like polyacrylonitriles,, polystyrenes and polyurethanes . In the last few years, an increasing variety of carbon aerogels have emerged, like graphene aerogels,, , carbon nanotube aerogels,, and biomass aerogels .…”

“…Polyimides were widely used in aerospace [1] , microelectronics [2] , national defense technology [3] and other fields [4] , due to its excellent thermal stability, mechanical properties, chemical stability and good dielectric properties [5][6][7] . Polyimide is one of the high performance polymers.…”

“…Recently, a variety of new aerogels have been synthesized, such as organic polymer‐based aerogels, supramolecular aerogels, hybrid aerogels, and graphene aerogels . Organic polymer‐based aerogels including polyaimide, polyurethane, and cellulose aerogels have attracted increasing interests due to their outstanding mechanical properties. Among them, polyimide (PI) aerogels derived from diamines and dianhydrides show superior mechanical properties compared to their counterparts with the same densities (e.g., Young's modulus over 100 MPa) …”
