High throughput analysis of grape genetic diversity as a tool for germplasm collection management

Abstract: Using 20 SSR markers well scattered across the 19 grape chromosomes, we analyzed 4,370 accessions of the INRA grape repository at Vassal, mostly cultivars of Vitis vinifera subsp. sativa (3,727), but also accessions of V. vinifera subsp. sylvestris (80), interspecific hybrids (364), and rootstocks (199). The analysis revealed 2,836 SSR single profiles: 2,323 sativa cultivars, 72 wild individuals (sylvestris), 306 interspecific hybrids, and 135 rootstocks, corresponding to 2,739 different cultivars in all. A to… Show more

“…2011). Consistent with the assumption that any wild‐collected V. californica with an allele other than 241 bp at VVMD7 is potentially a hybrid, all but one of the thirty‐five CAL hybrids were either heterozygous for the V. californica exclusive 241‐bp allele and a V. vinifera allele or “homozygous” for a V. vinifera allele; the assumption being these are heterozygous with the high‐frequency V. californica null allele; the one exception was a hybrid with the common rootstock ‘Saint George’ (Table S2).…”

“…They have been extensively used in grape for variety identification in collections, pedigree analysis, or genetic mapping (Karatas et al 2007;Vezzulli et al 2008;Laucou et al 2011;Moreno-Sanz et al 2011) and are very useful for distinguishing grape genotypes and determining genetic relationships among Vitis cultivars and species (Riahi et al 2012). Only a limited number of microsatellite data on oriental cultivars, particularly on Chinese cultivars, has been reported (Goto-Yamamoto et al 2009;Guo et al 2012a, b).…”

“…In this study, a set of 9 microsatellite markers Laucou et al 2011) was used to investigate genetic polymorphism and relationships among the main local Chinese grape cultivars and some newly bred Chinese cultivars. International cultivars such as Pinot Gris and Cabernet Sauvignon were chosen as a base for comparison.…”
