High Serum Thyrotropin Levels Are Associated with Retinal Arteriolar Narrowing in the General Population

Abstract: Our results substantiate evidence for an association between hypothyroidism and RAN. Potential mechanisms explaining this association are long-term hypertension, atherosclerotic processes, and inflammation.

“…However, so far no studies investigated whether and to which extent measurements of aortic and carotid wall thickness are correlated. Furthermore, the results of our study are in agreement with several other population-based studies which reported associations between high TSH and markers closely related to atherosclerosis such as endothelial dysfunction [32], heart valve sclerosis [33], retinal arteriolar narrowing [34] and oxidized low-density lipoprotein [35]. Hence, there is some evidence that serum TSH levels are positively associated with atherosclerosis, which is further supported by the results of our study.…”

“…This especially hampers the interpretation of the results regarding 3,5-T2, which cannot yet be related to serum concentrations of total and/or free T4 and T3, which are its putative precursors. However, the observed distinct patterns of the relationships between TSH and 3,5-T2 to AWT are in line with previous findings [23,34].…”

“…However, interpretation of these findings on a mechanistic basis is not straightforward. Recently, nonlinear associations of serum 3,5-T 2 concentrations with altered microvascular damage parameters and glucose metabolism were observed in a subpopulation of the Study of Health in Pomerania (SHIP-2 and SHIP-Trend) [41,42]. …”

“…Previous studies have shown associations of 3,5-T 2 with atherosclerotic risk factors and endpoints [11, [13][14][15]24] . Particularly, a linkage of 3,5-T 2 with lipid and glucose metabolism was demonstrated in animal models [13][14][15] , which was confirmed for glucose but not for lipid metabolism in 1,000 humans of the SHIP-TREND study [11] .…”
