Abstract: Over a one year period (November 2000-December 2001), clinical specimens from 189 dogs and 38 cats, from the city of Fortaleza, Ceará, Brazil, were examined at the Specialized Medical Mycology Center at the Federal University of Ceará to detect animals with dermatophytoses. The mycological analyses were conducted by direct microscopy and by fungal culture on Sabouraud agar, Sabouraud chloramphenicol agar and Mycosel agar. “…Brilhante et al found greater propensity of dermatophytosis in cats with breed and medium to long coat, as persian cat [11]. However, 13.33% of the cats used in this study were persians, 5% were siameses and 81.66% were without defined breed, and there was no prevalence of a group in proportion to others.…”

“…10 In dogs and cats, M. canis is the most frequently isolated species and plays a major role as a constant reservoir of zoonosis. 3,10,15 Yeasts of the genera Candida and Malassezia are usually isolated from the skin and mucosa of healthy cats and dogs but may become pathogens whenever there are alterations to the host's defenses or skin surface microenvironment. 4,14,18 Otitis externa and dermatitis in dogs and cats are usually associated with these yeasts as a primary agent or in combination with bacteria, with M. pachydermatis being the most commonly found.…”

“…The situation is more diversified with the geophilic dermatophytes that multiply in soil as saprobes and can become parasites for some of them [6,21]. The prevalence of dermatophytoses varies according to climate, temperature, relative humidity and precipitation in different geographical regions, as well as the natural reservoirs [20].…”
