High Power Density High Speed Diesel

Abstract: Ural Diesel Motor Zavod, assisted by FEV, is developing the completely new DM-185 engine family to cover a wide power range for mining vehicles, railway, marine and generator applications. In total, there will be 16 engine variants with six to 20 cylinders, specific outputs up to 234 kW/cylinder, low fuel consumption and EU IIIA / IMO II emissions compliance.

“…These factors have an impact on reducing the real benefits in the form of an increase in thermal efficiency. Nevertheless, the fact is that the increased expansion ratio is used in modern engines irrespective of whether they rely on spark ignition or compression ignition [30]. There are several main ways to differentiate the expansion ratio over the compression ratio.…”

“…Engines performing an Atkinson/Miller cycle, but based on the classic four-stroke engine, have been used in motor vehicles since the mid-1990s [8]. Due to the specific characteristics of this type of solution, they often occur in vehicles with hybrid drive systems, diesel locomotives, and in industrial applications [9], where the engine operates with an average high load. The Atkinson cycle is also used in modern engines for conventional propulsion systems in order to reduce pumping losses in the low load region [10].…”
