Selected Issues of the Indicating Measurements in a Spark Ignition Engine with an Additional Expansion Process

Abstract: Abstract:The paper presents the results of research on the turbocharged spark ignition engine with additional exhaust expansion in a separate cylinder, which is commonly known as the five-stroke engine. The research engine has been constructed based on the four cylinder engine in which two outer cylinders work as the fired cylinders, while two internally connected inner cylinders constitute the volume of the additional expansion process. The engine represents a powertrain realizing an ultra-expansion cycle. Th… Show more

“…In an era of stringent standards for fuel consumption and emissions of exhaust gases from vehicle drive systems [1,2], one of the directions of development in the design of these systems is the use of alternative drive systems (hybrid, hydrogen drives) [3][4][5]. Traditional drive systems using spark-ignition combustion engines and compression-ignition engines are subject to modification [6][7][8][9], which can be summed up as actions involving downsizing, downspeeding, direct fuel injection, boosting and rightsizing [4,[10][11][12]. Possibilities presented by Isenstadt et al [13] for reducing fuel consumption on the example of Skyactiv-G engine ( Fig.…”

“…In brief, the use of the process of additional expansion of exhaust gases is the more beneficial, the higher the temperature and pressure at the end of the main expansion process are. With a properly conducted combustion of the stoichiometric mixture these will depend on the amount of charge delivered to the cylinder [36,37]. In practice, the restriction is the increase in the exhaust gas pressure upstream from the turbine resulting from the increase of the required boost pressure.…”
