Palladium (Pd)-catalyzed selective hydrogenation of alkynes has been one of the most studied hydrogenation reactions in the last century. However, kinetic studies conducted to reveal the catalyst's active centers have been hindered because of dynamic surface changes on Pd during the reaction. In the present study, bimetallic Pd-Au nanoparticles supported on carbon nanotubes have been synthesized at room temperature as catalysts for selective hydrogenation of phenylacetylene, which show effectively enhanced selectivity compared to their monometallic counterparts. Structural and surface analyses of fresh and reacted catalysts reveal that selective hydrogenation of phenylacetylene is favored over nanosized Pd-Au bimetallic phases due to modifications in the Pd surface in terms of neighboring site isolation and electron density reduction.

Ionic liquids (ILs) were prepared in situ successfully on coconut shell activated carbon (AC) granules for biogas upgrading in a packed bed. In biogas upgrading, the saturated CO2 capture capacities of AC‐tethered 1‐butyl‐3‐propylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide (AC‐[BPIM][Tf2N]) and AC‐tethered 1‐aminoethyl‐3‐propylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide (AC‐[EPIM‐NH2][Tf2N]) were 2.58 and 2.95 mmol g−1 at 20 °C and 0.5 MPa, respectively. The heat of adsorption was 23–28 kJ mol−1 for AC‐[BPIM]‐based adsorbents and 65–71 kJ mol−1 for AC‐[EPIM‐NH2]‐based ones. As a CO2 concentration of less than 3 % is required for biogas to be used in a vehicle, an adsorption capacity at which 3 % of CO2 is reached in the upgraded gas could be more important. If the flow rate of the inlet gas was 50 mL min−1, the adsorption capacity at which 3 % of CO2 is reached in the upgraded gas was 1.44 mmol g−1 for AC‐[BPIM][Tf2N] and 1.95 mmol g−1 for AC‐[EPIM‐NH2][Tf2N] at 20 °C and 0.2 MPa. The adsorption selectivities of CO2 over CH4 were ∼92 and 95 % for AC‐[BPIM][Tf2N] and AC‐[EPIM‐NH2][Tf2N], respectively. The immobilized ILs exhibited a relatively stable cyclability in a packed bed.

An amino poly (styrene-co-maleic anhydride) polymer (ASMA) encapsulated γ-Al 2 O 3 pellet material has been synthesized successfully. After loading with Pd species and modified with morpholine, the inorganic-organic hybrid material shows an excellent catalytic property in the selective hydrogenation of p-chloronitrobenzene (p-CNB) to p-chloroaniline (p-CAN). In this procedure, morpholine can connect with the polymer layer in a form of amide bond and acts as an unparalleled immobilized dechlorination inhibitor, which can avoid further dechlorination efficiently and keeps stability due to the repulsive effect from the surviving C-O-C bond. The catalyst as prepared was characterized by using XRD, TGA, SEM, TEM, FT-IR, and ICP-OES, and it was further tested in the selective hydrogenation of p-CNB. It shows a supreme catalytic activity (almost 100%) and selectivity (up to 99.51%) after recycling for even 10 times, much superior to the blank alumina supported palladium (47.09%).
