High Energy Thermotherapy Versus Transurethral Resection in the Treatment of Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia: Results of a Prospective Randomized Study With 1 Year of Followup

Abstract: Satisfactory results were obtained after both treatments, with improvements following high energy microwave thermotherapy being in the same range as those after transurethral resection of the prostate.

“…The results in both groups are comparable with those reported by others [7,20,23,24]. Comparing TUMT and the control group, the standard operation was the most effective, as others report [13,17]. Some studies of high-energy TUMT have reported slightly larger increases in flow rate than in the present study but all randomized trials have consistently reported the best improvements after TURP.…”

“…The results for symptom reduction are comparable with those reported by others [4,8,10,17,22]. In a large study by Emberton et al [2] of > 3000 patients treated by TURP the AUA score decreased from a mean of 20.1 at baseline to 7.4 at 3 months.…”

“…Six RCTs, reported in 19 papers, 86,124,[165][166][167][168][169][207][208][209][210][211][212][213][214][215][216][217][218] were eligible for this comparison, in which a total of 549 participants were randomised. The number of participants randomised to TUMT or TURP ranged from 2 168 to 99.…”

“…Comparison of high energy TUMT (HE-TUMT) versus TURP demonstrated an average symptom score improvement of 68% at 1 year which stabilised at 57% after 2.4 years follow-up [87]. Such symptomatic improvement was comparable to TURP at both time intervals (74% and 62% respectively).…”
