High accuracy position and orientation detection in two-dimensional communication network

Abstract: In this paper we describe a method of high accuracy device position and orientation detection for HCI environments. Our position and orientation detection is an additional function to the Two-Dimensional Communication technology, which enables devices placed on a thin sheet to achieve two key functions for ubiquitous computing, to communicate one another and to receive electricity through the sheet wirelessly. This paper discusses the method developed to specify the positions and orientation of devices placed … Show more

“…The achieved accuracy was comparable to the system using Networked Surface [15] where the mean experimental error was about 13 mm in the wider range 500 mm × 500 mm, and was worse than the system using Two-Dimensional Communication Sheet [16] where the mean and maximum errors were about 1 mm and 3 mm, respectively, in the range 476 mm × 476 mm. Although the simplicity of the proposed system using four coils only would be still an advantage, the accuracy should be improved further.…”

“…The authors then develop a sensor consisting of two specially designed coils that directly measure the Fourier cosine and sine coefficients of the magnetic flux density and two simple loop coils. Although accurate 2D localization of an object has been approached using devices such as Networked Surface [15] and Two-Dimensional Communication Sheet [16], no method is available, to our knowledge, for 2D localization of LF RFID tags by putting a simple sensor on a desk such as four coils only.…”

“…RSSI on wireless LANs could be used [11], but although this method has enough robustness it is not low accurate. Shinoda proposed a method to measure the positions of devices on thin sheets [12]. However, this method cannot be applied to our system since our clothing supposes flexible conductive fabrics.…”
