Hidrodinâmica e transporte de material particulado em suspensão sazonal em um estuário dominado por maré: Estuário de Caravelas (BA)

Abstract: ABSTRACT. The objective of the present paper is to characterize the hydrodynamics and the suspended particulate matter (SPM) in the Caravelas Estuary under different tidal and river regimes. Four hydrographic campaigns were carried out comprising a complete semi-diurnal tidal cycle, comprising neap and spring tidal phases, and during dry and wet seasons. Water level, current speed and direction, salinity, temperature and turbidity were recorded in an anchored station near to the estuarine mouth. The residual S… Show more

“…According to Dyer (1997), for a mixed estuary, a substantial high tide is a requirement, but in a microtidal estuary, this intense homogenization can also be afforded by a low river inflow into the estuary. This fact was also verified by Pereira et al (2010) and Schettini and Miranda (2010) in the Caravelas Estuary (BA, Brazil) and Schettini and Carvalho (1999) in the Babitonga Bay (SC, Brazil). Stratification was very low during SC (Figs.…”

“…This means that experiments should be performed during the lower and higher periods of river inflow to the estuary, which depends on the annual hydrological regime (e.g., Pereira et al 2010), and at spring and neap tides, which present current velocity extremes (Byun et al 2013). Regarding the tides, usually the most extreme conditions are sought to visualize the wider spectrum of tidal effects, or, sampling is performed during the larger spring and smallest neap tide, consecutively (the order doesn't matter).…”

“…One of such environments are estuaries, which are semi-enclosed bodies of water with an open connection to the ocean. In estuaries, there is mixture between continental freshwater and the saltwater provided by the adjacent ocean (CAMERON; PRITCHARD, 1963;PEREIRA et al, 2010). These environments provide a range of ecosystem services, such as the nurturing of life, coastal protection, purification of water, and carbon capture, among others.…”

“…Estuaries are vulnerable to human activity, since they are used for access to the interior of the continent, they are receiving bodies for natural and industrial effluents, and they are subject to high human occupancy rates in their surroundings (MIRANDA et al, 2002;PEREIRA et al, 2010).…”
