Understading the hydrodynamic behavior and suspended particulated matter (SPM) transport are of great importance in port regions such as Vitória Harbor, which is located at Vitória Bay, Vitória -ES, Brazil. Vitória Bay is an estuary that has not been systematically assessed through a temporal analysis in order to identify its hydrodynamics characteristics and SPM exchange. This study aims to investigate salt and suspended particulate matter flux at the estuarine mouth of Vitória Bay by understanding the temporal variation of salinity, temperature and tidal currents within the water column and at the channel crosssection. Results showed that the estuarine mouth tended to present partial stratification periods during neap tides and little stratification in spring tides. The circulation pattern was mainly influenced by the tide, with little influence from river discharge. With regard to the SPM, the mouth of the estuary tended to show low concentrations, with the highest values occurring during the dry season. A close relationship between momentary discharge, SPM and salt fluxes was observed. Despite all the data was collected at the mouth of the estuary, the system showed an importation trend of salt in all cycles and SPM importation for three of the four studied tidal cycles. Thus, Vitoria Bay is not exporting SPM to the adjacent inner shelf.

A characterization of the sea level variability at tidal and sub-tidal frequencies at the northern shore of the Brazilian Northeast shelf for the period 2009-2011 is presented. The sea level data used was obtained from the Permanent Geodetic Tide Network from the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics for the Fortaleza gauge station. Local wind data was also used to assess its effects on the low-frequency sea level variability. The variability of the sea level was investigated by classical harmonic analysis and by morphology assessment over the tidal signal. The low frequencies were obtained by low-pass filtering. The tidal range oscillated with the highest value of 3.3 m during the equinox and the lowest value of 0.7 m during the solstice. Differences between the spring and neap tides were as high as 1 m. A total of 59 tidal constituents were obtained from harmonic analysis, and the regional tide was classified as semi-diurnal pure with a form number of 0.11. An assessment of the monthly variability of the main tidal constituents (M 2 , S 2 , N 2 , O 1 , and K 1 ) indicated that the main semi-diurnal solar S 2 presented the highest variability, ranging from 0.21 to 0.41 m; it was the main element altering the form number through the years. The low frequency sea-level variability is negligible, although there is a persistent signal with an energy peak in the 10-15 day period, and it cannot be explained by the effects of local winds.

Estuaries are dynamic environments that are highly vulnerable to anthropogenic influences, especially when adjacent to urban areas. In this study it is assessed for the first time the hydrodynamic characteristics of the Buranhém estuary (Northeast Brazil). The aim is to define the salt transport mechanisms and the hydrodynamics and stratification patterns of this tropical estuary, under both spring and neap tidal conditions. Fieldwork was carried out during 8 days covering varying tidal range conditions (July 30 th to August 7 th , 2015). Salinity and temperature were continuously monitored at moored stations at both the surface and bottom, whereas velocity profile was sampled by a bottom-mounted instrument. Average velocity in the water column was 0.46 m.s -1 during flood tides and 1.0 m.s -1 during ebb tides. Residual currents were seaward, with ebb dominance. The dominant salt transport mechanism is turbulent diffusion. Most of the layer Richardson values did not exceed 2, indicating well mixed conditions mainly during spring tides. Stratification varies with tide condition, with spring tides being able to further mix the vertical structure. Vertical velocity gradients that generate vertical mixing overcome the stabilizing effects generated by vertical density gradients.
