HgCdTe detectors and FPAs for remote sensing applications

Abstract: Short wavelength (SWIR; 1 to 3 jim), middle wavelength (MWIR; 3 to 5 tim), mid-long wavelength (MLWIR; 6 to 8 tim), long wavelength (LWIR; 8 to 14 tim), and very long wavelength (VLWIR; > 14 tim) Focal Plane Arrays (FPAs) are required for remote sensing applications. Advances in the Molecular Beam Epitaxy (MBE) growth of Mercury Cadmium Telluride (HgCdTe) and detector architectures utilized, have resulted in high performance detectors being fabricated in the 1 im to 16 im spectral range. “…MCT detectors cover almost the entire infrared region (1-20 µm) and their spectral cut-off can be finely tuned over the whole spectral range by varying the Hg:Cd ratio in the composition of the semi-conductor [27,31]. For applications above 3 µm, MCT detectors need to be cooled down to liquid nitrogen temperatures, but SWIR-MCT detectors can operate at around 200°K with Peltier cooling.…”

“…In HSI of agricultural crops, photonic detectors are commonly used for monitoring. Different types of detectors have been proposed; in particular, chargecoupled devices (CCDs) that are made from low-cost lead oxide-lead sulfide (PbO-PbS), indium gallium arsenide (InGaAs), or mercury cadmium telluride (HgCdTe or MCT) have been commonly applied to determine the amount of light emission or absorption at particular peaks throughout the spectrum (Casini et al, 1999;D'Souza et al, 1999;Sizov, 2000;Gat, 2000;John et al, 2003;Tran, 2003;Bajwa et al, 2004;Rogalski, 2004;Xenics, 2016). In this technique, it is important to identify a distinct spectral range and obtain particular peaks from the spectrum.…”
