Autonomous Household Energy Management Based on a Double Cooperative Game Approach in the Smart Grid

Taking advantage of two-way communication infrastructure and bidirectional energy trading between utility companies and customers in the future smart grid (SG), autonomous energy management programs become crucial to the demand-side management (DSM). Most of the existing autonomous energy management schemes are for the scenario with a single utility company or the scenario with one-way energy trading. In this paper, an autonomous household energy management system with multiple utility companies and multiple residential customers is studied by considering the bidirectional energy trading. To minimize the overall costs of both the utility companies and the residential customers, the energy management system is formulated as a double cooperative game. That is, the interaction among the residential users is formulated as a cooperative game, where the players are the customers and the strategies are the daily schedules of their household appliances; and the interaction among the utility companies is also formulated as a cooperative game, where the players are the suppliers and the strategies are the proportions of the daily total energy they provide for the customers. Without loss of generality, the bidirectional energy trading in the double cooperative game is formulated by allowing plug-in electric vehicles (PEVs) to discharge and sell energy back. Two distributed algorithms will be provided to realize the global optimal performance in terms of minimizing the energy costs, which can be guaranteed at the Nash equilibriums of the formulated cooperative games. Finally, simulation results illustrated that the proposed double cooperative game can benefit both the utility companies and residential users significantly.

Demand response has the potential to bring significant benefits to the optimal sizing of distributed generation (DG) resources for microgrids planning. This paper presents an integrated resources planning model considering the impact of interruptible loads (IL) and shiftable loads (SL) in microgrids, which simultaneously deals with supply side and demand side resources and minimizes the overall planning cost of the microgrid. The proposed model can be applied to offer a quantitative assessment how IL and SL can contribute to microgrid planning. The pure peak clipping model with IL and SL is also provided for comparisons. Moreover, sensitivity analysis of parameters in the model is performed. Numerical results confirm that the proposed model is an effective method for reducing the planning cost of microgrids. It was also found that the major contributing factors of IL and SL have great impact on the economic benefits of the proposed model in low-carbon economy environments.

Abstract. The optimization of operating times and operation modes of devices and systems that consume or generate electricity in buildings by building energy management systems promises to alleviate problems arising in today's electricity grids. Conflicting objectives may have to be pursued in this context, giving rise to a multi-objective optimization problem. This paper presents the optimization of appliances as well as heating and air-conditioning devices in two distinct settings of smart buildings, a residential and a commercial building, with respect to the minimization of energy costs, CO2 emissions, discomfort, and technical wearout. We propose new encodings for appliances that are based on a combined categorization of devices respecting both, the optimization of operating times as well as operation modes, e.g., of hybrid devices. To identify an evolutionary algorithm that promises to lead to good optimization results of the devices in our real-world lab environments, we compare four state-of-the-art algorithms in realistic simulations: ESPEA, NSGA-II, NSGA-III, and SPEA2. The results show that ESPEA and NSGA-II significantly outperform the other two algorithms in our scenario.
