Heteroatom‐Doped Carbon Dots (CDs) as a Class of Metal‐Free Photocatalysts for PET‐RAFT Polymerization under Visible Light and Sunlight

Abstract: A key challenge of photoregulated living radical polymerization is developing efficient and robust photocatalysts. Now carbon dots (CDs) have been exploited for the first time as metal-free photocatalysts for visible-light-regulated reversible addition-fragmentation chain-transfer (RAFT) polymerization. Screening of diverse heteroatom-doped CDs suggested that the P- and S-doped CDs were effective photocatalysts for RAFT polymerization under mild visible light following a photoinduced electron transfer (PET) in… Show more

“…processes, reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) and atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) [118]. While there has been no report available with NIR-sensitized NMP, there exist a few reports for RAFT polymerization with NIR light [119][120][121]. Recently, ATRP with Cu(II)-catalyst scaling in ppm amount in combination with a NIR sensitizer facilitated tailor-made synthesis of block copolymers [81].…”

“…[13] CDs also demonstrate interesting electrochemical redox properties. [14] Recently,CDs also received attention for photosensitized RAFT polymerization, [15] which was the first report regarding their use in ap hotocontrolled radical polymerization. Exposure to visible light as well as sunlight resulted in low dispersities,g enerally around 1.1.…”

“…33 Very recently, carbon dots (CDs) have been reported to be used as efficient metal-free photocatalysts in visible-light-regulated PET-RAFT polymerization. 34 As new nanocarbon materials, CDs are well-known for their low toxicity, low cost, good solvent adaptability and excellent photostability. Although such metal-free PET-RAFT systems may be environment-friendly on the whole, the catalysts remaining in the polymer products still create some problems in the performance of the nal products.…”
