Seabuckthorn possesses various bioactive compounds and exhibits several positive pharmacological activities. The present trial aims to determine the effect of seabuckthorn powder intake on high-fat diet (HFD)-induced obesity prevention in mice. The results suggest that seabuckthorn powder intake decreased body weight, fat mass, and circulating lipid levels, and improved insulin sensitivity in HFD-fed mice. Moreover, dietary seabuckthorn powder alleviated hepatic steatosis and hepatic lipid accumulation induced by the HFD. Furthermore, seabuckthorn exhibited obvious anti-inflammatory capacity in white adipose tissue (WAT) by regulating the abundance of inflammation-related cytokines, such as interleukins 4, 6, and 10; tumor necrosis factor α; and interferon-γ. More importantly, dietary seabuckthorn powder promoted a thermogenic program in BAT and induced beige adipocyte formation in iWAT in HFD-fed mice. Interestingly, we found that seabuckthorn powder effectively restored AMPK and SIRT1 activities in both BAT and iWAT in HFD-fed mice. Collectively, these results potentiate the application of seabuckthorn powder as a nutritional intervention strategy to prevent obesity and related metabolic diseases by promoting thermogenesis in BAT and improving beige adipocyte formation in WAT.

Overweight and obesity have become global epidemics, especially during the lockdown due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The potential of medicinal plants as a better and safe option in treating obesity and overweight has gained attention in recent years. Obesity and overweight has become a major public health concern, and its incidence rising at an alarming rate. Obesity is one of the major types of metabolic syndrome, resulting in various types of problems such as hypertension, diabetes, dyslipidemia, and excess fat accumulation. The current searching was done by the keywords in main indexing systems including Scopus, PubMed/MEDLINE, the search engine of Google Scholar, and Institute for Scientific Web of Science. The keywords were traditional medicine, health benefits, pharmaceutical science, pomegranate, punicalin, punicalagin, and ellagitannins. Google Scholar was searched manually for possible missing manuscripts, and there was no language restriction in the search. This review was carried out to highlight the importance of medicinal plants which are common in traditional medicinal sciences of different countries, especially Asia to prevent and treatment of obesity and overweight during the global pandemic and the post-COVID-19 era.

Background. Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) in childhood and adolescence is a relatively new disease. Until 1980, type 1 diabetes was considered the only form of diabetes in children and adolescents. Currently, the number of children suffering from type 2 diabetes is increasing annually worldwide. An increase in the number of adolescents with T2DM against the backdrop of overweight and obesity has also been recorded in Ukraine. The purpose of the study was to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of the dietary supplement Sakhnil as an additional complex of biologically active substances of plant origin in adolescents with impaired carbohydrate metabolism in the presence of overweight and obesity. Materials and methods. Eighteen adolescents with impaired glucose tolerance (IGT) against the background of overweight and obesity were under observation. The control group consisted of 20 obese adolescents without carbohydrate metabolism disorders. For patients with IGT, the criteria for inclusion in the study were: age of 15–18 years at the time of diagnosis, presence of hyperinsulinemia and insulin resistance (according to the Homeostatic Model Assessment for Insulin Resistance (HOMA)), overweight and obesity. Exclusion criteria were: type 1 diabetes and monogenic forms of diabetes, presence of ketonuria. Results. In the first and second groups, by the end of observation, there was no significant decrease in fasting glycemia, HbA1c level, as these indicators were within the reference values. However, at the end of the treatment, the first group with IGT showed a significant decrease in the level of glycemia 2 hours after the load. Therapy with the dietary supplement Sakhnil led to a significant decrease (by 23.1 %, p = 0.01) in glycemia 2 hours after the load, which was 7.06 ± 0.18 mmol/l. The difference between groups reached high reliability (p = 0.01). In the process of observation and treatment, there was a tendency to decrease the level of immunoreactive insulin (from 19.3 ± 3.1 μU/ml to 16.2 ± 2.7) and the value of the HOMA (from 3.1 ± 0.4 to 2.7 ± 0.4) in adolescents with IGT on the background of overweight and obesity. Conclusions. Dietary supplement Sakhnil is an effective remedy for the treatment of adolescents with impaired glucose tolerance. Sakhnil is well tolerated by patients, does not cause side effects.
