“…According to Celik et al, pomegranate [Punica granatum L. (Lythraceae)] flower extract, or fruit juice improve oxidative stress by preventing lipid peroxidation. In addition, it inhibits the activation of NFκB-mediated signal transductions induced by ROS through antioxidant activity [77]. ROS as well as superoxide and hydroxyl radicals are considered as initiators of free radicals chain reactions of lipid peroxidation.…”

“…Hyperglycemia is the initiating event which causes structural and functional changes such as glomerular hyperfiltration, glomerular, and tubular epithelial hypertrophy, and microalbuminuria followed by the development of glomerular basement membrane thickening, accumulation of mesangial matrix, and finally end stage renal disease (Vinod, 2012;Yankunzo et al, 2011). Hyperglycemia is also known to promote oxidative stress and hence involved in the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) which play a crucial role in the pathogenesis of diabetic nephropathy (Celik et al, 2009;Luo et al, 2010). Controlling hyperglycemia and improvement of antioxidant capacity will, therefore, prove beneficial in curbing the progression of diabetic nephropathy.…”

“…Pomegranate has been known to posses considerable pharmacological properties as pomegranate peel is a rich source of antioxidants, especially polyphenols. In some recent studies, pomegranate fruit and flower extracts exhibited free-radicals scavenging properties with simultaneous potent hepatoprotection against chemically induced liver damage in rodents 10,11 .…”
